What the care home does well

The staff team have worked hard to improve the service that is offered to the people who live at 2 Beech Close. It is now a good service that is managed well so that the people who live here have happy, fulfilling lives. The 2 relatives who returned our survey seemed reasonably content with the service offered: when asked `what does the service do well?` one wrote "Look after (name) and meet his needs". When we asked the staff `What does the home do well?` they wrote some very positive comments: "The management takes good care of the people we support. They always make sure shifts are covered to take care of the service users"; "Creating an environment that is enjoyable and good to live with"; "Everything from infection control, fire and safety, care plans, risk assessments etc"; "Good support to staff and people we support"; "Good team work"; "Good communication"; and "The home supports people well". There is good, easy to read information available about the home, people`s needs are assessed and each person has a contract with the provider. Support plans give staff good guidance on the way each person wants and needs to be supported, risks are assessed and managed well and people are supported to be as independent as possible. People are given a lot of opportunity for activities, especially away from the home, are encouraged to make decisions about their lives and given choices in everything they do. Complaints are dealt with well and staff we spoke with know how to keep people safe. The home is comfortably furnished, clean, and meets the needs of the people who live here. There are enough staff on duty, they are recruited well and receive good training, supervision and support. People`s views are taken into account as much as possible in all aspects of the running of the home, and health and safety is dealt with well. 2 Beech Close DS0000071734.V376834.R01.S.doc Version 5.2

What has improved since the last inspection?

We made 6 requirements and 3 recommendations following our last inspection. All of these have been met, so there have been a number of improvements. In the AQAA the manager listed how the service has improved in the last 12 months: increased staffing levels; more robust quality assurance and activity programme; regular audits; supervision of staff; people making more choices and being more involved in the running of the home; staff training; and improved communication with people we support.

What the care home could do better:

We have not made any requirements following this inspection. In the AQAA the manager showed that she is aware of ways in which the service can continue to improve. As the manager has now left, the provider will need to monitor the service closely to ensure the new manager enables the team to carry on moving the service forward.
