What the care home does well

The sister`s are properly assessed before moving into the home. The deputy manager who assisted me during the inspection introduced me to one of the sisters who had come to live at the home from abroad. The deputy told me that she had gone to assess the sister and then they both flew back together to England. There are thorough recruitment and selection procedures in place, to make sure that staff are suitable and safe to work with the sisters who live at the home. Care and support is delivered by skilled competent staff. New staff are given an excellent induction into care, and on going staff training is of a very high standard. All staff are properly supervised and this was documented in the staff files. The sisters said they enjoyed the food they were given and said that there was a good choice. One sister said `the meals are great, and we have such lovely dining rooms.` There is a varied selection of activities offered to the sisters , such as outings, aromatherapy and computing. Mass is held daily in the chapel. If the sisters prefer they can also watch the service live via a video link, which is transmitted on to the television in the bedrooms and communal lounges. The manager listens to the views of those with an interest in the home. There are regular minuted meetings in which the sisters and staff attend. It was evident that the manager and staff team take positive action to improve the quality of life of the sisters who live at the Convent, often as a result of listening to what people who use the service have to say. The building work is on going at the convent. I looked around Cornelia House. This was finished to an excellent standard, with bedrooms having specialist equipment such as ceiling hoists and specialist beds. All bedrooms are en-suite. The main areas of the home were warm and bright. The home was spotless and clean throughout.

What the care home could do better:

This service continues to provide excellent outcomes for people who use it. The manager and staff team are always looking for opportunities to develop and enhance this already excellent service, to ensure a positive experience for people who live and work and the convent.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: As part of our commitment to reassure people who use services and the public that we are monitoring the care people receive, we are carrying out Random Inspections on a small percentage of Good and Excellent services. These inspections are truly random, i.e. they will take place even though we consider the service to be still good or excellent, and have not received any issues of concern. The methods I used to gather the information needed included a visit to the home, conversations with the people who live there, their relatives, healthcare professionals and the staff. I looked in detail at the care and records of four people, examined other records and looked around the home. I spent four hours at the home.
