What did we do for this annual service review? The annual service review for Garswood included the following: An annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) was sent by us to the service. The AQAA is a self assessment and a dataset that is filled in once a year by all providers and it is one of the main ways that we will get information from providers about how they are meeting outcomes for people using their service. The AQAA also provides us with statistical information about the individual service and trends and patterns in social care. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the manager has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about incidents that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations and what other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The manager, Pippa Bates has sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the manager and staff are still providing an excellent service. They recognise that they are striving to make further changes as a result of listening to people. They were also able to evidence what they do well and any changes they have implemented. Surveys were sent out to residents and staff to gain their views of the service. We received completed survey forms from 8 residents and 1 staff. Residents were complimentary about how the service was run. Comments from surveys include: The home does everything well, they couldnt do anything better (resident) Theres always outings to go on, We could do with some new turf in the back garden following the bonfire. (resident) I am very satisfied, everything seems okay. If you want to be left alone you can be but if you want help or company you can have it. Im quite comfortable and happy the way I am. (resident) The home could not do any better. I am happy as it is. (resident) Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 I think the staff are very good, I am happy here. (resident) I feel that I can talk to anyone here, which is good for me as I have no one. I would like to have more windows open. I think the fact that I wanted to retire here and I want to die here speaks volumes. (resident) Generally speaking I have had some good times and some bad times. Sometimes better communication is needed. (resident) I think the outings and activities are fantastic now. (staff) The AQAA reports that all residents now have a key worker chosen by themselves. The key worker ensures that residents individual plans of care are updated on a monthly basis with the resident fully involved. All residents have a plan of care, which identifies their individual health and social care needs. Staff are provided with good information for the care of residents and the district nursing service is contacted for their clinical input and advice. The service now also accommodate a Dementia Unit for 7 residents whose needs require more specialist care. The AQAA reports that for the residents whose needs have changed over the years, they now have an improved level of care more suited to their needs. Staff have access to a good training programme and regular supervision to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to provide the care and support to people who use the service. Training is provided in safe working practices and the AQAA confirms staff continue with the NVQ qualification in care. The AQAA reports that staff have had further training in Dementia care, my home life, personal centred care planning and 24 hour nutrition in Dementia care. Staff are recruited through robust recruitment procedures to ensure residents are safe. New staff receive an induction, which ensures they are familiar with the services philosophy, its care practices and health and safety policies and procedures. Residents are encouraged to take part in social activities with staff support. Residents are also supported in following their religious beliefs. The AQAA reports that two activities persons consult with residents regularly to ensure the activities are suited to their needs and where possible try to arrange special wishes. Special wishes are for residents who would like to do something outside the usual range of activities. The service continues to make ongoing improvements to the environment to ensure that Garswood provides a safe, homely and comfortable place for residents to live in. Residents have been involved in choosing colours and bringing in their own furniture items when bedrooms have been refurbished. The manager continues to advised us about anything that has happened and any issues have been managed effectively. The manager works well with us and has demonstrated to us that the service continues to provide excellent outcomes for the people who use it. There has been no cause to visit the service since the last key inspection. We have not received any complaints since the last inspection. The manager reviews the quality of the service and residents or their relatives are given satisfaction questionnaires to complete. This enables them to express their views and be part of the management of the service.
