The home has a garden to the rear that is well-maintained and accessible through the communal areas of the house. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 10 What we found:
We visited the home unannounced on 25th June 2010 and spoke to three members of staff and two residents. The manager was not at the service when we visited but we spoke to him by telephone after the inspection. We checked some written records including residents care plans, staff files and health and safety checks. We also took into account any information about the home we have received since the last inspection. This included notifications of any accidents, incidents, complaints or safeguarding alerts. The residents we spoke to were positive about the support they get at the home. One resident said, You couldnt get any better. The staff are wonderful. Theyre friendly and theyve always got time for you. Staff said they get good support to do their jobs and that they work well together as a team. Staff also said that communication amongst the team is effective and that morale is good. What the care home does well:
Provides good information about the service to residents and people thinking of moving to the home. Each new resident receives a welcome pack, which includes a copy of the Service User Guide. This sets out residents rights and responsibilities whilst they are at the home. The service has clear aims and objectives and a structured admissions procedure. Residents sign up to the homes rehabilitation programme when they move in. This includes a commitment to participating in rotas for cleaning, cooking, laundry and other domestic tasks. Supports residents to achieve goals that are important to them and gives them opportunities to develop important skills. Involvement in tasks such as shopping, menu planning and cooking are designed to equip residents with the skills they will need when they move on. Supports residents to involve themselves in the running of the home and to raise issues if they are unhappy about something. There is a clear complaints procedure which outlines how concerns will be dealt with. Encourages residents to use their free time positively and provides opportunities for residents to take part in college courses, voluntary work, swimming, sports and to visit places of interest. Staff said that the service also aims to support residents if they indicate they would like to pursue a particular interest that is not currently available. Provides a healthy, well balanced menu. The service promotes healthy eating and the development of skills in menu planning and meal preparation. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 10 Provide good support for residents when they are ready to move on. This may include advocating for residents who have reached a point when they are ready to move but have limited options available to them. The service also provides continued support for people who have moved on in the form of outreach work. Promotes effective communication amongst the staff team. There are handovers between shifts and a communication book, which all staff are expected to read before beginning their shift. Team meetings are held regularly and sometimes include guest speakers. Staff are supported with appropriate training, individual supervision sessions and through a system of annual appraisal. On-call management support is always available to staff on duty. Liaises effectively with other appropriate agencies about residents care and treatment. We found evidence that staff communicate with relevant people, including consultants, community psychiatric nurses and care managers. Provides a clean, tidy and welcoming environment. We did not inspect bedrooms but found that the communal areas of the home were homely, hygienic and well maintained.
