What the care home does well

People`s needs are assessed before they move into the home so that their care and support needs can be identified. Care workers are aware of the current needs of the people in their care and care workers go about their daily work in a relaxed and friendly manner. The acting manager has completed a five day moving and handling train the trainer course which will enable her to provide moving and handling training to the rest of the staff. The shower room has been redecorated and new bath mats have been provided.

What the care home could do better:

Ensure that care plans include all the current needs of the people living in the home and any needs that no longer apply are removed from the care plan. Care workers need up to date information in order for them to appropriatley meet the needs of the people in their care. Ensure that risk assessments contain all the risks presented to both the person being cared for and the staff. Care workers need to be aware of all the current risks to the people living in the home and the actual actions they need to take to minimise those risks. Ensure that daily records are kept up to date and are accurate. People need to beprotected by accurate and up to date records, including care plans, risk assessments and fluid and food charts.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 12 What we found: We carried out a random inspection on 22nd June 2009 to check compliance with requirements made at the key inspection on 5th May 2009. Areas checked on this occasion included care plans, risk assessments and daily records. We checked the care records for two people currently living in the home. There were care plans and risk assessments in place for each person and these documents had been reviewed on a monthly basis. One of the care plans was not up to date and did not reflect the persons current care needs. It stated that the person had a pressure sore on their heel though when we asked about this we were informed that the pressure sore had actually healed. The care plan identified that the person suffered with Asthma, though actions staff were to take to assist the person with this was not included in the care plan or risk assessment documentation. We looked at the daily records held to check whether these were up to date. Of the two checked only one was up to date. The fluid charts and daily records had not been completed on the day prior to our visit.
