This was an unannounced inspection carried out by Janis Robinson, regulation inspector. A visit was made to the home on the 12th of March, 2009. The deputy manager, administrator, activities worker and three care staff were spoken with about their roles. Seven people that lived at the home were spoken with about their experiences of the support they received. Some records were checked, including the complaints record, training record, menu, activities and peoples finance. Parts of the building and accommodation were checked. People said that they were well care for, the food was good and that they enjoyed activities so that they had a good quality of life. Part of a medication round was observed. Medication was stored securely and staff were observed to record administration after giving tablets. However, one person was left with medication in their room, to take after staff had left. Whilst two tablets were to be sucked slowly, one tablet should have been swallowed whole with liquid. One person was seen wearing a shirt with their room number clearly written in marker pen on the back, which is disrespectful. Whilst the building was generally well maintained, some bedroom and corridor carpets were marked and stained and some decoration was damaged in corridor areas. The staff supervision records seen showed that staff were not provided with supervision at the minimum frequency to make sure they were appropriately supported and appraised. What the care home does well:
All of the people spoken with made positive comments about the staff and living at the home, which included Staff are very patient and kind The carers take care of us My family can come when they want to visit me, it makes a difference People said that they had regular access to their doctor, optician chiropodist and dentist so that their health was maintained. Staff confirmed that each person had a care plan and records showed that these were audited regularly to make sure they were up to date. Activities workers were employed, and the people spoken with said that they really enjoyed the activities provided. Trips out of the home took place each week and visiting entertainers were organised. People said that they particularly enjoyed crafts, bingo, and manicures. It was clear that people benefited from the range of activities provided, which made a difference to their lives. Care Homes for Older People
Page 4 of 8 The record of complaints detailed the action taken and outcome of the complaint so that these could be monitored. Staff were provided with safeguarding training and were aware of the action to take if they suspected abuse so that people were protected. All of the people spoken with said that they could talk to staff, who would listen to them, and that they felt safe living at the home. A planned training programme was in place so that staff had the relevant skills to meet peoples needs. Staff recruitment procedures protected people. Peoples money was kept safe and clearly recorded so that people were protected from abuse. Health and safety procedures were in place so that people were kept safe.
