Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 12 What we found:
We looked at fire safety records and noted that all fire safety equipment including the emergency lighting had been tested and serviced since the last inspection. The fire risk assessment has been updated and all fire exits had been cleared of obstructions All staff have undertaken fire safety training since the last inspection. An environmental risk assessment has also been completed. We looked at the recruitment files of three people who had started work at the home since the last inspection. Application forms including a health questionnaire, two references, proof of individuals identity and satisfactory POVA First and C.R.B. checks were in place before people started work. Some files contained a job description and some contained a record of the interview. The home has obtained an induction booklet that meets the Skills for Care standard and this will be used for all recently employed and new staff. The home provided a training matrix which showed that four people have undertaken training in the protection of vulnerable adults and a further four people were booked on this course in October 2009. Three members of staff are booked on a training course relating to death and dying. Six members of staff have undertaken training in manual handling since the last visit and three staff have completed training in the safe administration of medicines. However, the training matrix provided by the home showed that eight members of staff have not had any training in health and safety and eight staff have not had training in food hygiene. The majority of staff have not undertaken any training in infection control. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
The number of staff with current up-to-date training qualifications remains low. The range of training offered and accessed by staff is limited. However, the registered provider was able to demonstrate the efforts made to access training courses and assured us that staff would be registered on courses as soon as they became available. The staff application form must make it clear that all conviction including those that are spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act must be declared at application. All staff should be given a job description. A record of interviews should be kept and any gaps in employment history discussed at interview.
