What the care home does well

The routines of care and support are well established for each person. There are good chances for people to combine leisure and learning, opportunities to be part of the local community. Meals are well planned and prepared. Most of the environment is homely, spacious and pleasant. Staff are well trained and understand the needs of the people they are caring for.

What has improved since the last inspection?

Each person`s weight is now monitored regularly. Evidence that eye tests have taken place was available.

What the care home could do better:

An accessible bath would suit 2 of the people who live here better than the current bath. Weekend staffing levels should be reviewed to ensure that people continue to have choices at the weekend.

The number of persons for whom residential accommodation with board and care is provided at any one time shall not exceed 4 men or women 23rd May 2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: 26 Berrishill Grove provides residential care for four adults with a learning disability. Nursing care is not provided. The home is a modern, spacious bungalow on a quiet housing estate in Monkseaton. There are good road and transport links and the house is close to local shops and amenities. Each resident has a single bedroom and there is a bathroom and toilets. The house has a good sized garden at the rear and an area for parking to the front. Berrishill Grove is part of Northgate and Prudhoe NHS Trust. This was an unannounced inspection that lasted for 2 hours. The main part of this inspection was to assess how well the people who live here are cared for and supported. Service users are consulted on, and participate in, all aspects of life in the home. Service users are supported to take risks as part of an independent lifestyle. Service users know that information about them is handled appropriately, and that their confidences are kept. The Commission considers Standards 6, 7 and 9 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 6, 9 Each person has a service user plan that reflects their needs and individuality. EVIDENCE: 2 service user plans were inspected: the plans are detailed and there is a focus on each person’s individual needs, including how independence will be encouraged and promoted. The plans are linked to risk assessment and risk management plans to balance safety with promoting inclusion and choices. The Commission considers Standards 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 12, 13, 17 Each person takes part in activities that suits them. Mealtimes offer a healthy and varied diet. EVIDENCE: Each person has an activities programme that offers them the opportunity to be part of the local and wider community. Some people follow predictable routines in line with their assessed needs and preferences. There was some evidence that limited staffing levels at some weekends may reduce the choices and opportunities available during the week – see standard 33: this must be reviewed. The home’s menus are varied and offer a healthy diet: some people require a soft diet and staff are instructed to present this in an attractive way. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The Commission considers Standards 18, 19, and 20 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 18, 19, 20 Each person gets the personal support they require. Each person’s physical healthcare needs are being met. There appropriate systems in place to support each person’s medication needs. EVIDENCE: All personal support is provided in private. There are no restrictions regarding times for going to bed and getting up other than for scheduled activities and routines. There was evidence that people are encouraged to choose their own clothes and to take care of their appearance. People’s healthcare needs are met through the home’s systems making sure that they get to the right kind of help at the time that they need it. The home is very good at monitoring people’s conditions and making referrals to specialists before potential complications develop. Each person is reliant on care staff to administer medication in line with the home’s medication policy and procedure. Records were examined and a spot check made on a limited number medications: all those inspected were in order. There was evidence that staff have received the right training in order to deal with medication. All medication was stored in line with pharmacy guidelines. Service users live in a homely, comfortable and safe environment. Service users’ bedrooms suit their needs and lifestyles. Service users’ bedrooms promote their independence. Service users’ toilets and bathrooms provide sufficient privacy and meet their individual needs. Shared spaces complement and supplement service users’ individual rooms. Service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. The home is clean and hygienic. The Commission considers Standards 24, and 30 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 24, 27, 30 Each person is living in a homely and comfortable environment that is clean and hygienic. Bathrooms are not meeting all people’s needs. EVIDENCE: Berrishill provides a accommodation in line with “an ordinary home in the community: it is not recognisable as a care home. All shared rooms are spacious and attractively decorated and furnished. Outside there are well kept gardens. 2 people who live here prefer to have a bath but are experiencing changing mobility needs, and the current bath is not suitable or safe according to staff. The home must consider providing bathing facilities, following an assessment by an Occupational Therapist that reduce risks to people and staff members. Everywhere that was inspected was clean and hygienic. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 33, 35 The staff team at Berrishill are effective but staffing levels need to be reviewed. Each person benefits from an appropriately trained staff team. EVIDENCE: Staffing levels through the week are suitable for the current needs of each person who lives here: at weekends there are times when staffing levels are low and could be limiting choices as some people now require a staff ratio of 2:1. Staffing levels must be reviewed to ensure that people are offered choices and inclusion. The staff team are well trained and have an on going programme of training. EVIDENCE: All records that were inspected were in order, however, correction fluid should be used on those records required by regulations.
