We gave the owners of the service, Mr & Mrs Pyneandee, short notice of this visit as we needed access to records, which would not all be available to staff working in the home. The visit was planned to review the requirements we had made following our key inspection on 13/8/09. The owners have responded positively to the requirements and recommendations we made about the service. We are satisfied that the issues we raised have been addressed and we do not need to take any further action. If these areas had been in place when we visited on 13/8/09 the home would have achieved a 2 star good rating. Medicines are now being given directly out of the packet dispensed by the pharmacist, as this is a safer process. Staff have attended training updates in the administration of medicines to make sure there is consistent practice. A copy of the Royal Pharmaceutical society guidelines for the administration of medicines in care homes is available, for staff to refer to, as well as the homes own procedure. Guidance has been issued to staff on the use of medication that can be given on a when required basis (PRN) and detailed records for medicines used in this way are recorded each time they are given. This is to make sure staff are consistent when assessing if people need medication prescribed in this way and it is given appropriately. The temperature of the medication storage areas are now being checked and recorded to make sure medicines are kept safely and do not deteriorate. The staff training records have been updated to include details of the courses people have attended during 2009 and the dates of further training planned for the new year. This will enable the manager & provider to plan future training needs. At the time of our visit the whole house was in the process of being redecorated as it had become rather tired and worn looking. New flooring in planned in specific areas. When completed the house will have a modern bright feel to it. The owners have been reviewing the frequency of the staff meetings they hold and used training opportunities to increase the number of times staff have been able to get together. The owners have engaged the services of an outside consultant to look at developing systems for monitoring the quality of the service appropriate to a small provider. We have advised that information about new standards and regulations due in 2010 are considered as part of this process. What the care home does well:
