This inspection was carried out on 13th February 2006.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

Medication is stored and recorded appropriately to ensure the safety of residents. The home employs a motivator to ensure that suitable activities are provided for residents. Activities on offer include outings, bingo, a clothes show had been arranged for the day of the inspection. Menus offer choice and residents are asked on a daily basis what they would like for lunch and dinner. A choice of cooked breakfast is offered daily in addition to cereal. The environment is homely and well-maintained, there is ample seating area with 2 lounges and a smoke room.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The training manager has now implemented a full training programme to ensure that all staff remain up to date. The Responsible Person undertakes visits to the home and prepares a report, although these had not been forwarded to the manager on the day of inspection.

What the care home could do better:

Two areas of the home had a malodour on the day of inspection, the manager was made aware of this and intends to address it.

Date of last inspection 24th August 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Cedar Court care home has two units. This is the smaller unit and provides nursing and personal care for up to 30 persons aged 65 years and over, including up to 3 places for persons aged 50 years and over with a physical disability. Cedar Court is situated in a rural location near to Bretby village. Your Health Limited owns the home. The home is a two-story building; adapted for use as a care home. Residents have access to all parts of the home including a large enclosed, well kept garden. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 9 Safe storage, administration and return of medication ensures that residents are not put at any risk. EVIDENCE: The home has a detailed procedure for the storage and administration of medication. Medication is administered and stored safely. Since the implementation of a new returns policy for medication nationally, the home have implemented a system to ensure that there is still a way of tracking returned medication, this is signed by 2 nurses. Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 12,15 A choice of activities and food on offer ensures that staff meet the various expectations and preferences of all the residents. EVIDENCE: The home employs a motivator, she works closely with the motivator next door and arrange joint events. Outings are arranged as often as possible after consultation with residents. There is a church service held at the home Easter and Christmas and on occasions residents are taken to church if this is requested. There was a clothes show on the day of inspection. The home offers a choice of menu, residents are asked every morning what they would like for their lunch and dinner on that day. Meals are taken at a pace to suit the resident and this was evident on the day of inspection. Staff keep a record of food intake for residents with specific nutritional needs. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 19,26 The home is well-maintained, although a strong malodour in the lounge does not promote a homely environment. EVIDENCE: The home is well-maintained and safe for residents. The inspector viewed a number of bedrooms and looked at various areas around the home. The lounge had a strong malodour which needs to be addressed. The bedroom with a malodour highlighted on the day of inspection needs to be addressed. The lounge areas appeared homely with pictures and mirrors around and ample seating for the residents.
