What the care home does well

The service has always kept us fully informed of anything that has occurred since our last visit and they have responded well in the past to requirements and recommendations that have been made. Usually the service carries out a full assessment of needs before any resident is admitted to the home and the prospective residents are encouraged to `test drive` the home first: during this time the service also carries out more assessments of the prospective residents.

What the care home could do better:

Ensure that they do not admit a resident to the home when totally relying on other agencies assessments. Have policies in place for outside visits and ensures that more than one carer escorts groups of residents on these trips.

Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 6 What we found: A visit was made to this home on June 4th 2009. The reason for this visit was to follow up a report from the service to inform us about an incident whereby a resident jumped off a cliff whilst on a trip with other residents. We found that no initial assessment of needs had been carried out for the resident who was involved in this incident; we did look at the admission process and records for three other residents all of whom had had initial assessments of needs carried out prior to living in the home. We noted that although the home had acknowledged that the resident who was involved in the incident was a high suicide risk no care plan had been put in place to prescribe care in relation to this risk. However we noted that the resident had care plans in place for for personal care, motivation and for his specific mental health diagnosis. The daily notes recorded that the resident had been very restless for a number of days before the incident, however no plan of care had been devised to suggest ways of handling their restlessness. It was also ascertained during this visit that the service had no policies or procedures in place for visits outside the home or for managing residents being taken on holidays.
