Conditions of registration: 1. 2. The total number of persons that may be accommodated at any one time must not exceed 8. Admission of one named resident under the age of 65 years. Date of last inspection 14th June 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Eden House is the larger of two residential homes registered to take eight older residents. The home is privately owned and managed. It is a family run home with all family members having a role to play. The home is situated in a residential area on the outskirts of Oxford. Local amenities are available as is transport to Oxford and beyond. Accommodation is provided mainly in single rooms. The home is able to offer accommodation to those wishing to share. assistance with bathing can be provided using a lifting bath chair. The home also has a shower room. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. The inspection was unannounced and took place on a mid-week afternoon. The inspector toured the building and had informal contact with the residents. The home is currently meeting the needs of three residents who have become bed bound. The inspector examined all residents’ care plans and associated documentation and found them to be satisfactory. What the service does well: What has improved since the last inspection? The intended outcomes for Standards 1 – 6 are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live. Each service user has a written contract/ statement of terms and conditions with the home. No service user moves into the home without having had his/her needs assessed and been assured that these will be met. Service users and their representatives know that the home they enter will meet their needs. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. The Commission considers Standards 3 and 6 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 1,2,3,4,5,6. The home provides sufficient information on which prospective residents can make an informed decision. EVIDENCE: All standards within this section were assessed as met at the last inspection. No changes have been made to these documents and therefore these standards remain met. A slight alteration has been made to the terms and conditions document to reflect a change in charging may occur if there is deterioration in a resident’s condition. The intended outcomes for Standards 7 – 11 are: 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 7,8,9,10,11. The health and personal care needs of the residents are being met. EVIDENCE: Evidence was found at the inspection by reading residents’ files and in talking to residents that individual health, personal and social care needs are being met. This information was clearly presented and easily understood. Evidence was found that relatives’ representatives are reading and approving care plans. At present no residents manage their own medication. The proprietor assists residents in the management of medicines. The home has appropriate policies and procedures to manage this in a safe manner. A random selection of medication was checked against the medicines administration sheet. This was found to be satisfactory. At present the home is caring for three residents who are bed bound. The inspector was assured that the needs of these residents were being met and that the care plan had been agreed and approved by the G.P and D.N. Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 12,13,14,15 The home provides appropriate social activities and involves residents in the daily life of the home. EVIDENCE: The home provides a range of activities appropriate to the needs of its current resident group. Much use is made of the local pub and residents go out with staff members or their friends and families. Residents are encouraged to maintain an active interest in their environment and local community. The home also provides a range of indoor activities including television and music. The main meal of the day is served at midday. Residents had just finished their dinner and agreed that the food is very good. Residents are enabled to have an alcoholic drink following lunch if they wish. A choice of hot or cold teatime meal is also provided. Feedback from one newly arrived resident, was very positive about the home and the food in particular. Snacks and cold drinks, tea and biscuits are freely available. A selection of past menus inspected showed a good range of fresh foods being used with personal choice very much in evidence. Service users’ legal rights are protected. Service users are protected from abuse. The Commission considers Standards 16 and 18 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 16,17,18 The home has an appropriate complaints procedure, which is known to residents and their representatives. EVIDENCE: The size and management structure of the home ensures that complaints if any are dealt with at source and without delay. The home has a formal complaints procedure. Service users have access to safe and comfortable indoor and outdoor communal facilities. Service users have sufficient and suitable lavatories and washing facilities. Service users live in safe, comfortable bedrooms with their own possessions around them. Service users live in safe, comfortable surroundings. The home is clean, pleasant and hygienic. The Commission considers Standards 19 and 26 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26. The home is well maintained and is fit for purpose. EVIDENCE: The inspector was shown around the home and with residents’ permission was shown their bedrooms. All bedrooms were individually styled with residents’ personal possessions much in evidence. The home has sufficient toilet and bathroom facilities. The home has a lift and an assisted bath lift. The proprietor and staff are trained in the use of this equipment. On the day of the inspection the home was clean and mostly free from odour. Building work to provide a conservatory as an addition to the main building has been completed and provides useful extra space, which can be used for a variety of activities both in summer and winter. On the day of the inspection a loose plastic sheet had been placed in a resident’s room to protect the carpet. The inspector felt that this could present a health and safety hazard. The

JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 27,28,29,30 The home employs sufficient staff to meet the care needs of the current resident group. EVIDENCE: All standards within this section were assessed as met at the last inspection. No changes have been made to these documents and therefore these standards remain met. Recent staff training has been limited and the inspector requires that this be reviewed and that staff receive training pertinent to the needs of the residents.
