Conditions of registration: 1. Service users shall be within Categories OP (40), TI (5) or PD (5) within a total registration of 40 beds Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: Forest manor is a 40-bedded home which provides nursing care to older people, physically disabled people over 50 and five beds for individuals with a terminal illness. The home is situated between the town centres of Mansfield and Sutton in Ashfield. Hallmark Healthcare owns Forest Manor. The home is situated in its own grounds with a well-maintained patio and garden area, benefits from a large lounge and music room together with a spacious dining room. The home has 36 single bedrooms, four bathrooms and one shower room, eleven toilets, some of which are situated strategically near the lounge and dining room. The facilities within Forest Manor are suitable to achieving optimum independence for the service users. Wheelchairs can access all areas within Forest Manor, mobility aids are available such as hoists, transfer belts and strategically placed hand rails. A wheelchair accessible shower and bath area is evident and if required adjustable beds are available following a needs assessment. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. The unannounced inspection took place over a 3-hour period and involved one inspector. The main method of inspection was case note tracking, this is a method of selecting service users within the home and discussing with them their expectations and experiences of living within the home environment. The case tracking method also analyses the records of the service users to ascertain if the service users identified needs are being addressed appropriately within the care home setting and that their safety and well being is being maintained. On this occasion two residents notes were case tracked. Also as part of the case tracking process, a staff member within the home was informally interviewed to further evidence the quality of care afforded to the service users. It was established that the acting manager is currently in the process of applying for registration with the Commission for Social Care Inspection and her application is progressing in a satisfactory manner. At the time of the inspection a total of 25 residents were accommodated at the home. It was evident that the acting manager and staff within the home are very committed to the provision of a high standard of care for the service users. The acting manager and staff within the unit were very helpful and cooperative thus ensuring that the inspection process progressed in a professional and efficient manner. What the service does well:
Informal discussions with two residents and a service users daughter at Forest Manor established that the care provided within the home is of high-quality. Service users were particularly satisfied with the quality and choice of food provided and the homely environment within Forest Manor. Services users stated that care staff within the home are very sociable and respectful at all times. The inspector witnessed several interactions between

Service users and service users relatives stated that they are treated with respect and dignity and that privacy is always maintained within Forest Manor. EVIDENCE: Forest Manor Nursing Home DS0000063840.V258573.R01.S.doc Version 5.0 Page 10 Forest Manor utilises excellent evaluation and care planning documentation supplied by Hallmark Healthcare. At a previous inspection minor shortfalls were identified regarding the risk assessment, care planning and evaluation process. It was evident that some minor shortfalls in this process persist and the acting manager at Forest Manor is addressing the issues effectively. Both management and staff at Forest Manor demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the principles of maintaining privacy, dignity and respect. Service users spoken with were very complimentary about the way staff spoke to them. It was evident that staff always knocked on the resident’s bedroom door before entering. It is the intention of the acting manager to install doorknockers on all the resident’s bedrooms to further promote the principles of privacy and respect. Service user spoken with also stated that the staff respected their privacy and dignity when bathing or performing personal care. Service users spoken with stated that all staff within the home offers support in maintaining optimum independence and service users stated that they have control over all personal interventions performed by care staff in the home. In ensuring that service users needs and preferences are identified and met the acting manager has initiated regular staff meetings to discuss the needs and aspirations of the services users. Forest Manor Nursing Home DS0000063840.V258573.R01.S.doc Version 5.0 Page 12 EVIDENCE: The acting manager at Forest Manor is in the process of appointing an activities coordinator who will be employed initially for sixteen hours per week, but her hours will increase as occupancy within the home increases. Currently the home provides activities such as bingo, cards, dominoes and quizzes. Service users also have the opportunity to shop at Sutton in Ashfield town centre with the support of cares or relatives thus promoting social interactions beyond the immediate home environment. It was evident that the acting manager of Forest Manor with the support of Hallmark Healthcare is keen to provide an alternative environment for younger adults within the home to frequent as they wish. It was established that a separate lounge/recreational area would be provided in the near future so that the younger adults within the home have the opportunity to socialise within this area. Forest Manor utilises hired transport and it was confirmed that the residents could access day trips to local parks, public houses and Skegness, which the service users particularly enjoy. Religious needs are addressed effectively within the home as a monthly visit from a retired vicar is encouraged, which the service users can attend if they wish. No restrictions are in place in relation to visiting times. At the time of the inspection several relatives were visiting service users. Relatives spoken with confirmed that the home operates an open policy in relation to visiting times. When quizzed about the quality of service afforded to service users at Forest Manor, relatives could only praise all the staff and the service they provide. Service users spoken with were very well presented, dressed in appropriate clothing for the season, and were wearing their own shoes or slippers. Service users spoken with stated that the laundry service is efficient, and it was evident that service users cloths are returned clean and well ironed. It was evident that the food provided at the home is wholesome, nutritionally appropriate and varied. It was evidenced that service users always have a choice of meals and that daily menus are displayed for service users perusal. It is the intention the acting manager with the support of Hallmark Healthcare to adopt a “restaurant” style approach to meals times. Menu cards, which will be displayed on all dining room tables, are currently being formulated. The overall appearance of the dining room is pleasing, all dining tables were clean and dressed appropriately. EVIDENCE: The acting manager of Forest Manor attained her Registered General Nursing qualification in 1989. Sine that time she has gained experience in both the primary and secondary care settings. Since the recent purchase of Forest Manor by Hallmark Healthcare the acting manager has been able to develop comprehension-training opportunities for all grades of staff within then home in an attempt to further enhance the care provision for the service users. The acting manager has initiated a service user forum within the home so that issues relating to the care provided to service users can be openly discussed thus identifying and addressing any concerns. Plans for future developments such as refurbishments can also be discussed with the service users at these times so that the service users have an active role in the development of Forest Manor. The acting manager ensures that staff members receive supervision from either herself or senior members of her care team thus identifying and promoting good care practice at the home. Service users and staff spoken with felt confident in the acting manager’s ability to manage the home in a clear supportive manner, and it was evident that the manager promotes a friendly relaxed environment for the enjoyment of the service users. All documentation is stored securely to protect service users confidentiality. At the time of the inspection it was evidenced that the service users monies are effectively managed and a clear record of all transactions was evidenced thus protecting the service users from financial abuse. Staff spoken with were able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles of service user confidentiality and it was witnessed at the time of the inspection that service users confidentialities are maintained by staff members.
