This inspection was carried out on 16th November 2005.

What the care home does well

This is based on aspects checked during this inspection. The assessment process is good. Social services information makes up part of the way that the manager checks whether the home can meet the care needs of residents. A home assessment is also done, which then leads to a care plan. The resident living in the home is given support and encouragement to be part of the community. This ties in with the care plan and with the resident`s particular needs. The resident is given the chance to give their views about the home and say what they like and dislike about it. Support was given by staff to help the resident to feel confident to say what they felt at the inspection. Staff continue to show a good understanding of the needs of the resident, and were seen to communicate positively with the resident, with respect.

What has improved since the last inspection?

There was nothing found in the standards checked at the last inspection that needed to be improved. The manager said that there is now a good staff group, in whom he has a lot of trust. Some of the staff are working towards National Vocational Qualifications in care.

What the care home could do better:

The owner/manager could try to get the views of other agencies involved with the home, such as social workers and GPs, to help to assess the quality of the service.

Named Person To be able to admit the named person of category MD named in variation application V16913 dated 27 January 2005. 19th July 2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: Freedom Care Ltd/68 Conway Drive is a residential care home for up to two people to live in who have a learning disability. It is in the village of Shepshed. Bus routes and the village centre are within walking distance of the home. The home has two bedrooms and shared lounge and dining rooms. There is a small garden at the back of the house. This inspection was unannounced – staff did not know the inspector was coming. The inspection was on 16th November 2005, from 1.00pm to 2.00pm and 4.00-4.30pm, lasting a total of one and a half hours. The inspector spoke with one resident who was at home, who said they liked living in the home and told the inspector about things they liked doing. The main way the inspection was done was using ‘case tracking’. This means looking at the care and support the resident gets. This is done by checking records, talking to the resident and to care staff, looking round the home and watching how staff look after the resident. At the last inspection, most of the key standards were checked. At this inspection, the inspector checked the remaining key standards, to make sure good care was continuing. Two members of staff and the owner/manager, Joseph Kinch helped with the inspection. Because only one resident lives in the home, some information in the report is less detailed, to maintain confidentiality. EVIDENCE: The manager asks for feedback about the care and support given to the resident – quality questionnaires are used. The manager is looking at ways to make the questionnaires better to give residents and families the chance to say more. Other people who are involved with the home, like social workers and GPs are not yet being asked for their views – it is recommended that this is done. The resident was encouraged by staff to say what they felt at the inspection, and support was given to help the resident to feel confident to give their views.
