The reason for the inspection was to assess how the home was managing the medicines of the people who used the service. At the previous inspection on 2nd July 2009 we found that the management of medicine was still poor and following the CQC enforcement pathway copies of some medication records were removed for review by the Regional Enforcement Team [RET]. Due to internal changes within RET the review of the evidence did not take place within the timescale set down by CQC. As a consequence progress down the enforcement pathway did not occur within the required timescale and it was decided that to be fair the inspection of the home for compliance with safe handling of medicines should be started again. The reason therefore for the inspection on the 9th December was to reassess the management of medicines within the home. We found that there had been improvements in the management of medicines within the home. We found on the whole that the receipt administration and disposal of medicines were being recorded so that it could be seen that people who were using the service were receiving their medication as prescribed. The home was regularly auditing the medication and had introduced a running balance sheet for those medicines that were not packed into the Monitored Dosage System to ensure that these medicines were being administered as prescribed by the doctor. We found that the home was having difficulty auditing the liquid medication and as a result it appear that some of the liquid medicines were not being administered as prescribed. The home need to monitor the use of the liquid medication more closely to ensure that like the tablets and capsules people are having their liquid medication as prescribed. We found that information about medicines in the care plans had improved and it could be seen more clearly why medicines had been prescribed, altered and discontinued. We found that the home had introduced a competency assessment programme to ensure that all of the staff responsible for administering medicine were administering the medicines safely and accurately. We found however that the home was not ensuring that medicines requiring cold storage conditions were being kept at the correct temperature. We found that the home had been having problems maintaining the correct temperature of the medicines fridge and as a result had moved the medication to the kitchen fridge. We found that the maximum and minimum temperatures of the kitchen fridge were not being measured and recorded on a daily basis and therefore the home could not guarantee that the medication had been stored within the temperature ranged stated by the manufacturers. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
The home needs to ensure that the maximum and minimum temperatures of the fridge where medicines are being stored are being measured and recorded on a daily basis to ensure that the temperature of the fridge is maintained within the range specified by the
