What the care home does well

Detailed recordings in care records are made and the records are kept up to date on a daily basis. The new manager is committed to maintaining good standards in the home based on the outcome of this inspection. Residents` comments indicated that staff members are committed to providing good quality care, which was evident during the inspection. There is a good choice of meals and the entertainment coordinator is committed to providing good quality recreational activities throughout the week.

To be able to admit the person of category DE named in the variation number V11968 Date of last inspection 29th October 2004 Brief Description of the Service: Kibworth Court care home cares for forty older people in a purpose built property. It is set in the village of Kibworth Beauchamp close to a variety of amenities. The premise consists of two floors and residents have access to both floors with the use of the passenger lift or stairs. There are a variety of aids and adaptations in the home based on individual residents assessed care needs. There are thirty-eight single bedrooms and one double bedroom all with ensuite facilities. There are sufficient toilet and bathroom facilities on both floors based on forty people residing in the home. The home has a garden to the rear of the premises. This inspection took three hours to complete. The outcome of this inspection was very positive. No Requirements or Recommendations were made on this occasion. Residents spoken to indicated that they are satisfied with the level of care provided on a daily basis. Conversation held with staff members indicated that they are adhering to safe work practices in the home. Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live. Each service user has a written contract/ statement of terms and conditions with the home. No service user moves into the home without having had his/her needs assessed and been assured that these will be met. Service users and their representatives know that the home they enter will meet their needs. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. The Commission considers Standards 3 and 6 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 1, 2 and 3 Robust admission and assessment processes are in place for the protection of residents. EVIDENCE: Detailed inspection of the Statement of Purpose indicated that the document contains sufficient information about the services the home provides. Three residents spoken to indicated that they are satisfied that the home provides the care that was promised to them. Terms and Conditions of residence are given to residents which includes a contracts which are signed by the residents. Three residents’ assessments were examined. The documents were completed identifying the care needs of the residents. The three residents spoken to were satisfied that the care needs identified in the assessments matched their care needs. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 Good care planning is in place to ensure that residents receive their medication as prescribed including access to health care provisions. EVIDENCE: Three residents’ care plans seen indicated that all aspects of personal and health care needs including recreational needs are recorded in the document. Residents spoken to indicated that they are satisfied with the quality of care given. One resident stated ‘The care is spot on’. The residents spoken to indicated that they receive good access to their General Practitioner and Community Nurse when the need arise. Their daily care records seen indicated that health care professionals visit the premise on a regular basis when required. The medication process was observed and found to be carried out in accordance with their written medication policy. This policy was examined and found to contain sufficient information for staff guidance when administering medication to residents. Residents spoken to indicated that they receive their medication at the times required. Their medication records were up to date. One resident commented ‘I feel they know what my care needs are’. Two staff members spoken to gave good verbal responses regarding good residents’ care which included respecting residents in the event of death occurring. Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 12, 14 and 15 Giving residents’ choice over their daily lives and providing good quality meals is managed well for residents residing in the home. EVIDENCE: Three residents spoken to indicated that they are satisfied with the choices given in the home. For example residents spoke positively about the choice of meals offered in the home. One resident commented ‘Good food and the choice is excellent. The activities coordinator indicated that a range of activities is provided throughout the week for example musical movements which was confirmed by three residents. One resident stated ‘I go bowling all over the country’. Another resident commented ‘We get to be ourselves everyday’. Service users and their relatives and friends are confident that their complaints will be listened to, taken seriously and acted upon. Service users’ legal rights are protected. Service users are protected from abuse. The Commission considers Standards 16 and 18 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 16 and 18 Complaints and adult protection are managed well for the protection of residents residing in the home. EVIDENCE: Detailed examination of the written complaints and adult protection procedure indicated that sufficient information is given to staff members for their guidance. The complaints log book seen indicated that complaints are dealt with in accordance with given timescales. Two staff members spoken to gave good verbal responses concerning how to reduce the risk of elder abuse in the home. Three residents spoken to indicated that they feel safe residing in the home. Service users live in a safe, well-maintained environment. Service users have access to safe and comfortable indoor and outdoor communal facilities. Service users have sufficient and suitable lavatories and washing facilities. Service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. Service users’ own rooms suit their needs. Service users live in safe, comfortable bedrooms with their own possessions around them. Service users live in safe, comfortable surroundings. The home is clean, pleasant and hygienic. The Commission considers Standards 19 and 26 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 19, 21, and 26 Adequate standards are being maintained concerning the premises with an emphasis on providing a homely environment. There is sufficient numbers of bathing and toilet facilities for residents’ use. The home is kept clean and hygienic for residents’ comfort. EVIDENCE: An inspection of the flooring, fixtures and walls throughout the premises indicated that sufficient standards are being maintained. One resident commented ‘I love it here, it’s the best’. Another resident stated ‘It’s a good place’. Sufficient numbers of toilet and bathing facilities were seen during an inspection of the premises. Three residents spoken to indicated that they are able to use these facilities when the need arise. An inspection of the premises indicated that it is kept clean and hygienic. Residents’ comments were positive about the cleanliness of the home. Service users are supported and protected by the home’s recruitment policy and practices. Staff are trained and competent to do their jobs. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 27 The number of staff deployed to work in the home is sufficient to meet residents’ care needs. EVIDENCE: Observations made during the inspection and the staffing rota seen indicated that the number of staff on duty is sufficient based on the number of residents residing in the home. Residents’ comments regarding the availability of staff members is positive, indicating that a care staff is always available when needed. Service users are safeguarded by the accounting and financial procedures of the home. Service users’ financial interests are safeguarded. Staff are appropriately supervised. Service users’ rights and best interests are safeguarded by the home’s record keeping, policies and procedures. The health, safety and welfare of service users and staff are promoted and protected. The Commission considers Standards 33, 35 and 38 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 32, 37 and 38 Good management support is available for residents and the staff group for the efficient operation of the home. Good care record keeping and safe work practices are adhered to for the protection of residents residing in the home. EVIDENCE: Three residents and two staff members spoken to indicated that the management approach creates an open and inclusive atmosphere which they find to be positive. Discussion held with the acting manager indicated that she appears to be suitably experienced and qualified to manage this service. Three residents’ assessments, care plans, daily and medication records seen indicated that staff members are adhering to good record keeping. The fire alarm test certificate was seen which indicates that fire safety equipments are in good working condition. The fire alarm was tested during the inspection and it was in good working order.
