What the care home does well

Several relatives were spoken to during the inspection and all were very satisfied with the care being given to the residents. Comments included, "staff are brilliant" and "it is very good here". Detailed assessments of residents are carried out before it is agreed that they can come and live at the home, to make sure that the home will be able to meet their needs. Staff make a real effort to keep residents` families up to date on the care that they are providing by discussing the care plans with them and informing them of any changes. From the number of visitors at the home during the inspection (many of whom come several times or more per week) it was clear that visitors were made welcome. Everyone knew who to approach if they had any concerns or complaints, although they all stressed that they did not have any complaints about the home.Care plans were in place to tell staff what care each resident needed and all staff were knowledgeable about individual residents` preferences and routines. As stated previously the CSCI had received a number of calls expressing concerns about proposed changes to the use of the communal areas on the ground floor of the home. It was evident that a lot of consultation had taken place with the residents` representatives about this and discussions were still ongoing. It was clear that the views of residents and relatives mattered to the home and would be taken into account when making the final decision about any changes.

What has improved since the last inspection?

Since the last inspection a lot of redecoration and refurbishment has taken place at the home. Thought had been given to providing an environment suitable for people with dementia through the use of colours on doors and pictorials as well as signage for rooms such as bathrooms and toilets. Although concerns had been raised about staffing levels no evidence was found that the home was consistently understaffed. Many of the residents do need a lot of help in most areas of their life and a discussion was held with the manager about ensuring that the dependency of residents was taken into account when determining what staffing levels were suitable. A staff training programme since the last inspection has ensured that staff have received more training this year, especially in topics that are particularly relevant to them in caring for people with dementia.

What the care home could do better:

The main area that the home needs to improve in was the provision of social activities for residents. Mental and social stimulation for residents was lacking and the acting manager agreed that this was an area that needed more consideration. Some parts of the home smelled badly. Again the acting manager agreed that this was so and said that the smell was due to the carpets, which despite being cleaned very regularly still produced a bad smell. It was reported that carpets in the hallways and communal areas were being replaced in the near future.
