Two inspectors made a short visit to Pendlebury Manor on 27 January 2010 to look at what action had been taken to meet the requirements made at the key inspection that was carried out in August 2009. Since August, the manager has checked the needs of all the people living at Pendlebury Manor and as a result, has increased the number of staff on each shift to make sure that peoples needs will be met. We looked at the files of all staff who had been appointed since our last visit to the home and all showed that all the necessary checks had been carried out before the member of staff started work at the home. This included Criminal Record Bureau disclosures and references being obtained, as well as information to confirm the persons identity and their employment history. These checks are necessary to make sure that the person is suitable to work with the people who live at the home. The mandatory training with regard to fire safety, safeguarding adults, and moving and handling had improved and most staff working at the home have now received updated training in these areas. The manager has undertaken a moving and handling instructors course so that she can carry out the moving and handling training for new staff at their induction, as well as the updated training for other staff. This means that all staff will have the necessary guidance and knowledge to make sure that they can provide safe care without risk of injury to the residents or themselves. Most of the staff at the home have now received training on dementia and more training sessions have been booked. This will help them to understand the needs of the people they care for. The manager has introduced a number of improvements at the home. There is now an audit system to check the medicines and care plans regularly so any areas of concern can be identified quickly and action taken to improve them. Survey forms had been sent out to relatives and some had been returned with positive comments such as, everyone is helpful and friendly, good team of care staff, mum always looks nice and a noticeable improvement in the management of the home. Meetings are being held with relatives and residents and minutes have been taken of these to show what had been discussed and what action had been agreed. Training has improved and most staff have received training with regard to fire safety awareness, safeguarding of adults and moving and handling. This training will help to make sure that the staff can protect the people who live in the home and keep them safe. What the care home does well:
The home has a stable staff team and members of the team have received training to enable them to know how to care for people living at the home. Recruitment at the home is robust so that management can be sure staff are suitable to work with the people who live at Pendlebury Manor. A quality assurance programme is in place so that areas of concern can be highlighted and acted upon quickly. The manager is communicating with residents and relatives to gain their views on the home and care provided. This is helping to make sure that the home is being run in the
