Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We found that the way in which medicines are handled has improved since the last inspection. Other requirements, not involving medicines, were not checked during this visit. We watched medicines being given to people at teatime and saw that national guidance on the administration of medicines was followed. We looked at the medication charts of all the people living in the home. We noted three omissions in administration records and saw that when staff had needed to write details of prescribed medicines on a chart by hand, some entries had not been signed. We found that the receipt of medicines and changes made by the persons doctor were recorded and signed. We looked at the care plan of one person who takes responsibility for their own medicines and found a record to say it was safe for this person to self-medicate. We asked about the training staff are given on medicines, and looked at staff training records. We found that staff who administer medicines had recently attended a medication course. We found that creams are kept in peoples rooms and a record of when the cream is applied is kept. Two people were prescribed creams that are only available on prescription or from a pharmacist; we were told that these creams may be applied by staff who do not otherwise give medicines. We found that the home has a separate cupboard for storing controlled drugs, but the cupboard does not meet legal requirements. We noted that the use of controlled drugs is recorded in a special register. We saw that the home has a separate refrigerator for storing medicines; however we found that the fridge temperature is not monitored over 24 hours. We noted that the reference book on medicines was an old edition, and that the homes medicine policy was dated 2005 and needed reviewing.
