What the care home does well

A good interaction was noted between staff and people living in the home. The home was clean and reasonably well maintained with a homely feel. Care plans demonstrate that staff request the supported of professional people to ensure peoples needs are met.

What the care home could do better:

The medication system should be improved. There were gaps in recordings making it impossible to audit peoples intake. Medications were signed as given in error. A prescribed medication was not available in the home and items hand written on the Medical Administration Records were not countersigned to ensure their accuracy. Three senior staff administer medicines in the home and each had received training in this respect but no evidence was found that their competence had been assessed. Any monies held in the home for people is recorded. Two signatures evidence each transaction, receipts are retained and a check of one persons monies was found to agree with the balance sheet. However a full audit could not be carried out as any monies held outside the home is not recorded. Also a payment from someone living in the home to staff for transport could not be justified.

Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 7 What we found: This inspection was carried out following some concerns raised about the service. We received information from people that told us they have concerns about the medication systems, the provision of personal care, the handling of peoples personal monies and the quality of management in the home. An inspector visited the home unannounced on 1st October 2009. Time was spent talking with the senior care worker on duty. Interactions between support staff and people living at the home were observed, the medication system was reviewed and personal finances were checked. The manager was not on duty during the inspection. We found some standards have deteriorated at the home so we will do a key inspection in the near future to review the service provision.
