Conditions of registration: None Date of last inspection 9th August 2005 Brief Description of the Service: The Garth is a Georgian property situated in the centre of the small Herefordshire market town of Kington. It has been extended and is registered for 32 places, with a maximum of 22 places for service users requiring nursing care. It offers accommodation for service users of both sexes over the age of 65, who are frail or physically disabled. It is privately owned and managed by Mr Alan Prior and Mrs Patricia Prior. The Home was first registered in 1988 and consists of a two-storey building with a purpose built two-storey extension. The Home has 22 single en-suite bedrooms, two double en-suite bedrooms. There are a further two single bedrooms and two double bedrooms without an ensuite facility. There is a passenger lift in the new building and a stair lift in the original Georgian property. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. This was an unannounced inspection that took place between 10.10 – 13.25 hrs on the 10th January 2006. This was a focused inspection, for further information about this service please refer to previous inspection reports. A pharmacy inspection will be carried out in the next few weeks and a separate report will be written. The Inspector looked around parts of the building and a number of care records were inspected. The deputy manager, residents, staff and a visiting General Practitioner were spoken to during the inspection. No complaints have been received by the Commission about this service since the last inspection. The Home continues to notify the Commission of any significant events that take place in the Home as required by the regulations for care homes. What the service does well:
The Garth is situated in the centre of the small market town of Kington with shops and amenities accessible to residents within walking distance from the Home. The Home is very well maintained, nicely decorated and furnished. The Home is very clean and there were no bad smells. The atmosphere of the Home is very welcoming. Residents’ spoken to all expressed their satisfaction with the care they received from the staff. A resident told the Inspector that ‘the staff are always jolly’. All residents seen were well groomed, and many residents had been to the hairdresser that morning, which is a weekly event in the Home. Residents are able to spend time in their rooms or in one of the dayrooms in the Home. Residents’ clothes are nicely laundered. Care records are maintained for each person. They contain detailed information about all aspects of care for each resident so that the care staff know what care is required by each of the residents. The care plans are reviewed each month and the residents or their representatives’ agreement to the plan of care is obtained. Residents are offered a variety of wholesome and nutritious meals. Residents confirmed that they have a choice of food and the food is good. Residents are able to eat in one of the dining rooms in the Home or in the privacy of their room.
