Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment tool that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It has also provided us with numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any concerns or complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and detailed giving us all the information we asked for. The homes manager continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and this shows that they have managed issues well. The manager states within the AQAA that they ensure the involvement of people using the service by Holding 6 monthly Individual plan reviews where relevant parties can voice their views / wishes. We then hold annual full reviews where all interested parties can be involved in planning future objectives. The service also Use communication plans which detail the degree of communication held by all our service users - this dictates the methods we use to offer choice and take their opinions on board. For example an individual without formal speech may use gestures to communicate - we then interpret these gestures to allow them to make choices about aspects of their life. Complaints / compliments slips can be completed by anyone involved in the care of our service users such as Family members, friends and professionals staff members. All care plans, profiles and guidelines are regularly reviewed to allow new information regarding individuals to be added - e g if an individual has progressed and has developed a new way to communicate their feelings. Each Sense home completes a self assessment - this includes an opportunity for service users where applicable and their representatives to evaluate and comment on the service being provided. Equality and dignity is interwoven into all the aspects of the service from direct communication, support plans, activities, dietary requirements and staff approaches. The AQAA states that All staff receive induction and foundation training. All care plans are person centred and therefore respect the rights and needs of the individuals concerned. Neale Ave demonstrates within the AQAA that they can meet specific religious and dietary requirements, with guidance and involvement of family. They also provide age related activities. The service provides good information within their State of Purpose and service users guide. All support plans are personalised. There is also a clear complaints procedure. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 People using the service are supported to develop life skills, by having high staffing levels. and access to an educational day service. There is regular contact with families and support with friendship of peers. Regular reviews of their health care needs, staff awareness and training in safeguarding procedures with robust internal financial checks, protect people using the service. Staff are recruited using thorough employment checks and they all receive induction regular training. There is a continuous development plan in place. The AQAA states that all staff undertake mandatory training completed in their first 12 weeks of employment as well as an induction work book with a further 6 training modules within in their first 6 months. The data provided within the AQAA confirms that twelve of the twenty seven staff working at the home hold National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) in care at level 2 or above with the remaining being supported to develop their skills. All staff have completed an induction programme that meets standards set by Skills for Care. The registered manager is reflective about the service and states the following when asked what the service does well. We provides a very high level of staffing to provide an excellent standard of care. The high staffing levels mean there are no time constraints on personal care - it is not unusual for a morning or evening care routine to take an hour or more if that is what the service user wishes. This flexibility extends into the activities provided - these are planned on an individual basis making sure that activities are appropriate and that the service users can get as much out of the activity as possible. We see care as being totally person centred and our Individual plans and care planning reflect this. All plans are totally individual and are reviewed and adapted to meet the changing needs of our service users. CQC has not received any complaints since the last inspection and the AQAA confirms that no complaints have been made direct to the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The next inspection of this service will be based on the Fees and Frequency Regulations 2007 and the assessment of risk of the service. Further clarity will become evident as the new registration and inspection system under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 is confirmed.
