What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the manager. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The manager returned the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) which gave us all the information we asked for. It is very detailed and gave clear evidence of how the home has improved since the last inspection which was carried out on 21st October 2008. There was one requirement issued at the last inspection, that was for the service to train staff in the subjects relevant to service users. This was covered within the AQAA and has now been completed. There has been a change of manager since the previous inspection, this is James Vasco who is now managing the service alongside two other small homes. The manager explained in the AQAA that regular service user meetings are arranged to obtain views, likes and dislikes in the way the service is run. Two surveys from both residents and staff were received to provide further evidence to form an opinion of the service. The manager pointed out that residents can not always access the community because their was not always a driver available, the staff have supported residents to obtain a bus pass for them to access outside facilities. The manager told us that they have introduced a new care planning process which is based upon personal profiles. Each resident is assessed on their care and social needs before admission, and are included to discuss their individual needs and aspirations. The home has been open for approximately 2 years and has documentation to enable Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 new residents to make up their own mind before moving in through a staged transition period to ensure that the staff have their best interests at heart. The manager informed us that all complaints and concerns are taken seriously and acted upon and five concerns have been dealt with during the past year in a satisfactory and timely manner. The staff are going to develop a pictorial complaints procedure as a way forward for improvement within the next 12 months. The home has a small loyal staff team of support workers to care for the residents helping residents to remain as independent as possible, offering support with their care needs, as well as when they access the community. The people living in the home have always told us that they are comfortable and happy there. Two of the residents returned the survey. One said I go to lots of activities outside the home. All the residents continued to be very satisfied with the quality of care and continue to take an active role in the day to day running of the home even to the extent of preparing and cooking the meals with staff. The manager continues to let us know at CQC (Care Quality Commission) about things that happen at the home to ensure they manage their issues well, and meets up with other managers to discuss issues within the organisation. Our judgement resulting in the information showed that the home continues to provide a good service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection within three years of the last key inspection. However, we can inspect at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 5 Reader Information
