What the care home does well The manager continues to inform us of any incidents or events that effect the well being of the residents. The AQAA was completed within the given timescale, was detailed and provided us with the information requested. The ethos of the home is that the residents have as much say as possible in the running of the home. The residents confirmed this during our visit. We saw that there is a good relationship between the residents and staff. The residents confirmed they are treated with respect. The manager showed us a number of systems that are in place to consult with residents, families and other professionals about the service the home provides. There is a robust recruitment procedure in place and staff files examined showed that all the required information had been obtained prior to them commencing employment. This inspection was undertaken as part of our review of the service and looked at the outcomes for the residents. The last key inspection was carried out on 9 August 2007. Since our last inspection the home has been extended to accommodate up to eight residents. During our visit we spoke to the residents who were at home and they told us that they were very happy living at Abbey Lodge and they have a lot of say in how the home is run. One of the residents has been part of the interview panel for the recruitment of staff. They told us that whilst it was a daunting experience they felt that they had been well supported and had meetings to brief them prior to taking part. Residents told us they are kept informed on any changes and are able to express their views and these are listened to and acted upon. During a tour of the home we found that it had been well maintained and residents rooms had been recently decorated with input from the residents on colour choices etc. We examined two care plans and found that these provided detailed information about the care needs of the residents and what they are able to do for themselves and the support they require from the staff to ensure that their needs are met appropriately. Residents told us that since the extension they have carried out work in the garden and have been involved on the purchasing and the planting of the plants in the raised beds. The residents told us that they very much like spending time in the garden and look forward to having BBQs in the coming months. Our examination of the health and safety records showed us that regular checks are carried out to ensure that the health, safety and welfare of all who enter the home is protected at all times. Where a risk is identified, a risk assessment with measures to reduce this is put in place and highlighted to staff as appropriate. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
