What the care home does well We found that accurate records of the handling of controlled drugs are kept in the CD register and that stocks of controlled drugs are regularly checked. What the care home could do better: We found a significant number of discrepancies between records of administration on medicine charts and amounts of medicines received into the home or in stock. We found that two of the care plans we looked at contained incorrect information related to medicines. There were no protocols to guide staff as to when to administer medicines prescribed "when required". Inspection Reports from formerly the Commission for Social Care Inspection are displayed in the entrance foyer of the home. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: During the inspection we visited each of the four floors in the home. We talked to staff and were shown the storage facilities for medicines. We looked at a selection of medicine charts, other medicine records and a small number of care plans. We learned that staff had recently attended a training course on medicines. We watched some people being given their medicines after lunch and saw that this was done in a safe and friendly manner. We found that, with one exception, the receipt of medicines into the home and the disposal of unwanted medicines were recorded. We found that controlled drugs were securely stored, and recorded in the correct way. However we found that some controlled drugs and other medicines were kept in rooms where the temperature was higher than recommended for the storage of most medicines. Medicines that needed to be kept in a refrigerator were correctly stored. When we looked at medicine charts we found a number of discrepancies between the administration record and the amount of medicine supplied by the pharmacy or remaining in stock. We found that some people were prescribed painkillers and certain other medicines when required. There was no additional information with the medicine chart to help staff decide if the medicine was needed. Two people were being given medicines hidden in their food. Records for one person showed that this had been agreed as being in that persons best interests. Contradictory information was seen on different pages in the other persons care plan. We looked at another care plan, belonging to a person with special medical needs and saw instructions to administer a medicine that was no longer prescribed by the doctor.
