It is situated on a busy arterial road out of Heanor town centre and is situated close to all local amenities. It has retained many original features and has four communal lounges that allow for Annual Service Review Page 2 of 6 residents to be in small groups during the day. The home changed owners at the beginning of 2007 and a refurbishment programme was put in place throughout that year. There is a large car park for staff and visitors adjacent to the home. The weekly fees for this home range from £352 - £500. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received from Ashfields, or asked them for, since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service, and was received in September 2009. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some statistical and numerical information. Information we have about Ashfields on the QA system has been reviewed, including any complaints or concerns that have been raised. The last key inspection report and the inspection record have been reviewed The service folder was reviewed for any other relevant information. We also looked at any relevant information that we have received about Ashfields from other organisations. We looked at what any other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA was returned within the time scale asked for, and in sufficient depth to allow judgements to be made. Among the improvements to the service identified in the AQAA were: In house training to cover mandatory training sessions especially with any issues relating to the service users well being. Care plans are more in depth with the involvement of the service user and their relatives, more person centred to make sure we meet the needs of our individual service user. All mandatory training completed before commencing employment. In depth person centered care plans. Open door to manager for service users and relatives, staff. Continued training for our activties co ordinator. More involvement from our service users in menu planning and activity planning. Nearly all staff have now completed adult protection training and this is ongoing for all new starters. Maintenance man has been in post for awhile now so jobs get done quicker and we have had a lot of refurbishment. Improved staffing levels. Regular staff supervisions. Most staff now NVQ trained to at least level 2. Regular audits and actioning our finds. Keeping supervisions up to date. Looking and responding to Questionaires. The Commission has received one complaint about this service since the last key inspection. This complaint was investigated under the homes complaints procedures, and a member of staff was dismissed as a result. In their AQAA the agency stated they had received three complaints in the last twelve months, which had been investigated in line with the homes complaints procedure, none of the complaints were upheld. Two referrals have been made under safeguarding adults procedures in the last twelve months. We sent out five questionnaires to people who use this service, and five to members of staff, to gain their views on the service and how well it is meeting peoples needs. Of these, four were returned by people who use the service, and four from members of staff. The information provided in the questionnaires has helped to inform this Annual Service Review. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Comments received from people who live at Ashfields included: Excellent presentation. Spotless. Attentive. Peaceful. No complaints whatsoever. Ashfields is a very pleasant and caring place, with bright kind and cheerful staff, who are always there to help and understand. The cleanliness and food are excellent. They make residents feel at home and involves families in decisions and activities whenever possible. Among the comments received from members of staff were the following: Ashfields has always been a very friendly residential home, the staff are extremely supportive of each other. Residents and relatives alike, all comment on how clean it is and how pleasant the staff are. Always a good atmosphere, good rapport with relatives and clients due to the staff. Management and staff maintain the high level of personal care in each service user. We always give support and extra time with each service user. Ashfields offers good care and support to service users and families. We have received thirty six notification forms during the past twelve months to report notifiable incidents involving people who receive a service or the staff. A review of these notifications has shown that they were routine, and appropriate action was taken by the care home in all cases. At the last key inspection this service was rated as being an excellent service. There are no ongoing concerns about the quality of care that Ashfields offers, and a review of the documentation that has been received does not highlight any issues that need to be addressed. As a result of all the information received we have decided not to alter the inspection date for the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The next inspection of this service will be based on the Fess and Frequency Regulations 2007 and the assessment of risk of the service. Further clarity will become evident as the new registration and inspection system under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 is confirmed.
