Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received from Aspen Court, or asked them for since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was received in January 2010. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some statistical and numerical information about the service. Information we have about Aspen Court on the QA system has been reviewed, including any complaints or concerns that have been raised. The last key inspection report and the inspection record have also been reviewed The service folder was checked for any other relevant information. We also looked at any relevant information that we have received about Aspen Court from other organisations. We looked at what other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA was returned within the time scale asked for, and had been completed in a professional manner, providing all of the information asked for, and in sufficient depth to allow judgements to be made. Among the improvements to the service identified in the AQAA were: We always aim to ensure the home is cosy, warm, receptive, calm and happy. Continue to develop our Early Warning Audit Tool, this is our monthly audit which is carried out with the Regulation 26 visits. Care planning is more in depth and resident focussed. Improvement in use of the Liverpool Care Pathway in conjunction with implementation of the Life Enhancing Care Home Programme, funded by Macmillan and supported by Derby City and Derby County P.C.T. Catering Commitment, improving the service we provide. Started to train staff in complaint handling and taking responsibility for this. Staff retention has improved. Training subjects continue to be introduced with more distance learning packages, care leaders have played an important role in ensuring training is up to date for staff. The Commission has not received any complaints or concerns regarding this service since the last key inspection. In their AQAA the care home stated they had received fourteen complaints in the last 12 months, which had been investigated in line with the homes complaints procedure and eight were upheld. One referral has been made under safeguarding adults procedures in the last twelve months. We have received twenty-two notification forms during the past twelve months to report incidents which affect the welfare of people living at the home or the staff. These were covering a range of different circumstances and have been dealt with appropriately by the care home staff. We sent out several questionnaires to people who live at the care home and to staff. Of these we had eightreturned by people living at the home and seven by staff. The comments within the questionnaires have helped to inform this Annual Service Review. Comments received from people who live at the care home included: Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Activities go on daily, I like to participate if I can, if not I like to watch. Aspen Court needs more carers. I am happy and satisfied. Nothing to complain about, everyonme has been good to me. The carers are here when I need them, they are friendly and professional. More carers neweded. It makes getting up enjoyable, to think of what is in store. Games, and fun and chatter, plus reading. They could listen to the residents a bit more, employing one extra carer in the morning would be a big improvement. Would like a lick of paint, to brighten the place up. A fresh refurb, would do wonders for the home and morale of the residents, families and staff. Comments received from staff in the questionnaires included: They provide up to date equipment for individual residents needs. Up to date training for staff, and regular meetings for staff. They could provide more staff to minimise waiting times for residents needs. Nice atmosphere, friendly, any complaints are dealt ewith as soon as possible in a professional manner by the manager. A little less agency staff would be great. The home is very clean, and most of the staff are true carers. The majority of the staff worek well together as a team. Another carer on duty would be a great help. Open and approachable staff. An excellent activities coordinator, residents areinvolved and stimulated as much as possible. Food is good, all home cooked, and will cater for residents preferences. At the last key inspection this service was rated as being a good service. There are no ongoing concerns about the quality of care Aspen Court offers, and a review of the documentation that has been received does not highlight any issues that need to be addressed. As a result of all the information received we have decided not to alter the inspection date for the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The next inspection of this service will be based on the Fess and Frequency Regulations 2007 and the assessment of risk of the service. Further clarity will become evident as the new registration and inspection system under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 is confirmed.
