What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection. We looked at any notices that were received under Regulation 37; these are the details of illness, death, injury or any event in the care home that affects peoples well being. We asked the manager to complete an annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) form. This form is for the manager to carry out a self assessment of how well the outcomes of people using the service are being met. We sent questionnaires to people who use the service, their relatives and to staff and health and social care professsionals to enable us to obtain their views on how well the home is run. We looked at the report that was written as a result of the homes last key inspection. What has this told us about the service? The manager sent us the homes annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it and it was clear and gave us all of the information that we asked for. The manager said in her AQAA we had an emergency admission in March 2009 and the person underwent a brief period of assessment that included trial visits prior to moving in and we received positive feedback from their relatives relating to our admission pocedure. The AQAA showed that people using the service have regular meetings and the notes are now written in a pictorial format to help people to understand them. The AQAA also showed that six of the homes bedrooms have been decorated and paintwork repaired (where scuffed by wheelchairs) since the last inspection. The AQAA informed us that a new sensory room and herb garden had been made and that one of the living rooms has had new carpet fitted. Eight of the homes thirteen staff hold an NVQ level 2 or above qualification and the home now holds employment information on all of the agency staff that works there. We received completed surveys from three people that use the service (members of their families helped them to complete these) and they were all positive about Avalon; their comments included the home does everything well and all my needs are taken care of by the staff. I am happy and content and helped to join in with the activities that I can do and the home looks after me well. We received six completed surveys from staff that work in the home and they were all positive about the manager and the way the home is run; their comments included Avalon has a good manager and an excellent team leader and the staff work collectively as a team to ensure that the people using the service get the best possible quality of care. The manager leads by example and has very high standards she is very proactive and always looks to improve the service. The people using the service come before everything and their well being is upmost. It is a pleasure to work here. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 We received two completed surveys from health and social care professionals that are involved with Avalon and their comments included staff seem to understand the needs of the people living at Avalon and they try their best to meet them. On the whole the home is well managed and looks homely. Staff are very supportive and efficient at dealing with peoples finances and myself. The last key inspection took place on 29/12/2008 and the report showed that Avalon was providing people with a Good service. After looking at the AQAA, the last inspection report and all of the other evidence we feel that the manager knows what improvements she needs to make and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 29/12/2010. However we can inspect at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
