What the care home does well All contact with people living in the home was positive during the visit to the home. Those spoken had no concerns to make about their care in the home. A tour of the premises found them fit for purpose and staff spoken to appeared very committed to their work. Good staffing ratios were in place and interaction between staff and people living in the home were pleasant and supportive. What the care home could do better: The status and legality of the person selling cigarettes and other items must be addressed for the safety of people living in the home and their financial protection. The home would benefit from a visit from a fire officer to advise them on further measures to enforce their smoking policy. The policy on alcohol intake must either be changed or enforced so that people living in the home clearly understand their responsibilities in this area. It would be beneficial for team meetings to be smaller and more accessible so that staff can fully participate and any concerns can be aired in a constructive manner. Random inspection report

Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 7 What we found:
This was a random unannounced inspection of Avondale Care Home which was undertaken as a result of adverse comments made in an anonymous letter from a member of staff. As a result interviews took place with a staff nurse in charge, a registered mental nurse, an enrolled nurse and a healthcare assistant. A tour of the premises took place and interviews were held with a number of people living in the home. The homes policy document on alcohol was read. It was confirmed that a woman visits the home three times a week to sell cigarettes and other items to people living there. Her status and the legality of the merchandise is unclear and there was some contradictory evidence about whether she is taking advantage of the vulnerability of people living in the home. The homes attempts to confine smoking to the designated areas is only having a limited effect and damage caused by smoking can clearly be seen in the home. Equally, there is clear evidence that some users of the service are drinking in the home although this is against the stated policy of Avondale. All staff accepted there was some stress in the work but they stated that this was implicit in their work. Generally, they felt they were being well supported by managers although there is some doubt about the effectiveness of team meetings because of their size.
