Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home continues to improve the services offered to people who live there. The manager tells us that following discussion with the local Fire service, he installed swing free fire doors so that people living in the home have much greater freedom to walk around the home and access their own room without restrictions of heavy doors, this also complies with fire regulations. We spoke to the manager about the actions that had been undertaken as a result of our last inspection of the home. He informed us that they have taken all appropriate steps and complied with our requirement to improve on the storage of controlled medicines as changes in the medicine safe custody laws had required him to do so. The AQAA also informed us that the manager continues to implement changes as required to meet changes in legislation around peoples capacity to make decisions which will ensure peoples rights and choices are protected. We have not received any complaints about the service in the last twelve months. The manager told us in the AQAA that they have not received any complaints in the last year. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 We received nine completed surveys from people living in the home this told us that people received enough information about the home before they moved in. They all said they knew who to speak to if they were not happy and all said they knew how to make a complaint. They told us that staff were always or usually available when they needed them and they always or usually listened and acted on what they said. People living in the home told us that they always or usually received the care and support they needed. They also told us that there was always or usually activities for them to take part in and that they always liked the food that was provided by the home. When we asked what the home does well, people said things like, The staff look after me very well The staff are trained to a high level and are very caring. When we asked what the home could do better there were three people who commented all sayingnothing. We received comments from relatives of people living in the home and they all told us that I am very satisfied with the care provided They provide a secure, family atmosphere allowing as much personal freedom as is safely possible The owners are particularly approachable and willing to spend time discussing care issues. When we asked external professionals what the home did well they said things like, They always treat people as individuals The care is very good and the staff always ensure that both social workers and relatives are made aware of any changes in peoples needs The 5 staff surveys told us that the manager continues to follow safe recruitment of staff to make sure people are suitable to work at the home, they then receive a thorough induction into their role. All 5 staff told us they are receiving training that helps them understand and meet peoples needs. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to improve outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We think the quality of the home may have improved since we last did an inspection. We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 24/09/2010.
