What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at information that we have received and requested since the last inspection. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was sent out to the home and was completed and returned to CQC in a timely fashion. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys were sent out to people who use the service, and other interested parties, to seek their views on the quality of the service provided. The Commission received 3 completed surveys from people living at the home, 5 from staff and 2 from health and social care professionals. The service makes contact with the CQC if they have any concerns or wish to share information. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA gave evidence that the home is effectively managed and that there is a commitment to ongoing improvements. The home seek the views of people living at the home by speaking with everyone on a individual basis at least once a month. This is an opportunity for people to share ideas and opinions about any changes in the home. There is also a suggestion box that can be used by people living or working at the home and any visitors. The home has a complaints procedure and people who completed questionnaires said that they knew who to speak to if they were unhappy, and how to make a complaint. All 5 staff answered YES to the question Do you know what to do if someone has concerns about the home? One complaint has been received since the last inspection. This was investigated within the agreed timescales. The CQC sent out questionnaires to staff in connection with the complaint received and no comments raised any concerns about the home. Staff who completed these questionnaires were positive about the care provided at the home and the support that they received. There is a robust recruitment procedure that minimises the risks of abuse to people living at the home. All staff said that the home had carried out appropriate checks before they began work. The AQAA states that all staff are trained in the protection of vulnerable adults. To promote the health and safety of people living and working at Beech Tree House all equipment is regularly tested and serviced. Policies and procedures are updated to reflect current good practise guidelines. The AQAA demonstrates that the home aims to provide care that is personal to each Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 individual and both health and social care professionals commented that the home was flexible according to individual need. All staff answered ALWAYS to the question Do you feel you have the enough support, experience and knowledge to meet different needs of people who live at the home? The AQAA shows that the home has tried to introduce more varied activities for people, however people living and working at the home, and health and social care professionals, said that this is something that the home could do better. Comments under the heading What the service could do better included a few more activities and days out and more variation in events/entertainment/activities. The manager wrote that one of their plans for the future was to encourage support from family and friends to ensure that people have access to a wide range of activities. In addition they are planning for staff to have awareness sessions which will involve them spending a day in the lounge to experience the day to day life of the people who live at the home. Staff were very happy with the training available to them. 66 of staff have a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in care at level 2 or above. All staff said that they received training that was relevant to their job and 3 staff commented that training was excellent. Both health and social care professionals said that staff USUALLY had the right skills and experience to support individuals health and social care needs. All information received gives evidence that the home continues to provide a good service and is committed to ongoing improvements in line with the wishes and needs of the people who live there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 19th September 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
