What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. What has this told us about the service? The home returned the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. This included detailed information. It identified a number of areas where improvements have been made in the last year and others where further developments are either planned or would benefit service users. Our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. It is acknowledged that that AQAA was received in June 2009 and that further improvements may have been made since this date. Some of the improvements noted included: - a new format for recording more detailed information about the views of relatives, the introduction of a pat dog session, which residents appear to really enjoy, the bathroom on the ground floor has been converted to a shower room, new carpets have been fitted in several rooms and automatic fire door closures have been fitted in some areas to enable residents to have easier access around the home. In response to an issue that was raised within the homes annual quality assurance questionnaire the home has also appointed an additional carer to cover the busy period between 11am and 1pm. The home has told us that they have received two complaints one of which was upheld, and that they were both resolved satisfactorily. The home has also introduced a new form for recording complaints and compliments. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. As a result of the last key inspection carried out in August 2008 three requirements were made. There was evidence in the AQAA that these requirements have been Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 addressed. We received comments from two residents, one from a relative who completed the survey on behalf of their relative in the home, three from social and health care professionals and three from staff working in the home. Comments from residents included I am more than satisfied with the care and love Ive been given. They include everyone in activities. They also have a nice garden. A comment from a relative included I think all of the staff work extremely hard and have really good relationships with the clients. They are very good at keeping the family aware of any changes. Staff comments in relation to a question about what the home does well included: - it gives a nice and friendly atmosphere and is homely, activities, teamwork and training, training is very good and up to date. In response to a question about what the home could do better, responses included: - more outside activities e.g. walks, could take them out for coffee or a walk along the seafront. Social and healthcare professionals opted mainly to use the tick system in responding to the questions rather than to give comments but in each case the response was positive. One comment included good, caring rest home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We consider the quality rating of the home remains good since the last key inspection. We will do a key inspection by August 2010 to review our assessment of the home. However, we reserve the right to revisit this decision if additional information is brought to our attention.
