This unannounced random inspection took place during May 2010, and included a visit to the home. This type of inspection is carried out to monitor how the home is operating, and what the quality of the service is like for the people who live there. The visit lasted for three hours, and before the visit we looked at all of the information we had about the home. This included the previous inspection report, and reports of any events that had happened in the home. Some people who live in the home and staff who work there sent us surveys to tell us what they thought of the service. During the visit we looked at things like care plans, and general record keeping processes. We also looked at what the home had done to address the one requirement that had been made at the last key inspection. We spoke to people who live at the home to find out what it is like to live there, and we spoke to staff about how they make sure peoples needs and wishes are met. Records showed that people are supported to access all of the health care services that they needed to help them stay well, such as GPs, psychiatrists, district nurses and epilepsy nurse specialists. We saw that staff follow policies and procedures when they are giving out medication, and medication records were completed correctly. Information we have, and records in the home tell us that staff have access to a wide range of training in subjects that help to to support people in the right way. The organisation has its own training manager who provides much of staff training on site. Staff we surveyed and spoke with said that they were provided with a good level of training. Staff spoken with during the course of the inspection had detailed knowledge of peoples needs, and worked closely with people to maintain good working relationships. We saw that there is an effective quality assurance system in place which includes opportunities for people to be involved in how the home runs, and to check that policies and procedures are being followed. This is done by way of surveys, audits, manager checks and home meetings. What the care home does well:
