Briar Hill House is a 28 bedded care home (with nursing care) located very close to Rugeley town centre. It is owned by Methodist Homes for the Aged (MHA) and the registered manager is Mrs Pauline Kincaid. It is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection to meet the needs of adults with a physical disability. The home is on two levels and each floor has 14 bedrooms, a large lounge, spacious dining room and an individual kitchenette. All bedrooms are single occupancy and have an ensuite facility, which includes a lavatory, washbasin and a walk-in shower, seven of the bedrooms have a separate adjoining lounge area. A variety of specialist equipment is available to assist the people who use the service. There is a hairdressing area and a relaxation room available and the home has a garden with a water feature and summerhouse.

What the care home does well The home excel in many areas including in house auditing, staff training, presentation and upkeep of the home and minimal amount of complaints. The reputation of the home is high and the care standards and documentation are exemplary. The management team take great pride in maintaining the high standards and the staff are proud to work in the home. Almost 80% of care assistants are now NVQ 3 trained and 100 % are NVQ 2 trained. Relatives told us the home is exceptionally well thought of in the local area and their loved ones are content in the home. One lady told us `I am always made welcome and I am offered drinks and lunch when I visit. The staff are very professional yet friendly and its a pleasure to come here. The home is always immaculate and smells fresh, the cleaning staff work very hard to maintain it. We haven`t had any grumbles at all, the staff are always asking if everything is alright and is there anything they can do.` What the care home could do better: We left no recommendations or requirements at this visit. The management team plan to do the following: Undertake the continence update and diabetes training. They are hoping for an extension at the front of the home and more storage space, this needs to be reviewed by Maintenance Manager for MHA. Continue the programme of redecoration of rooms and carpet replacement. Train more care assistants to assist in ventilator care. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: The home was staffed with appropriately trained nurses, carers and ancillary staff to meet the needs of the people using the service. The activity facilitator was in the home ensuring the individuals social needs were being met. There were many photograph boards around the home displaying events and themed days which everyone had obviously enjoyed. Life books are in place for all people living at the home and the families enjoy reminiscing with them. The management have replaced some carpets within the home and have all profiling beds in place. En suites have been converted and upgraded into wet rooms to assist independence and enable staff support. The training that is available has increased to accommodate all grades of staff in many areas beyond the mandatory training. The home has employed a chaplain, a music therapist and they have their own in house reflexologist. Robust audit systems are in place in many areas including care plans. One lady told us The home is clean, warm and comfortable. The staff are approachable and caring. There are a variety of activities every week and the atmosphere is happy.
