This unannounced random inspection took place during June 2010, and included a visit to the home. This type of inspection is carried out to monitor how the home is operating, and what the quality of the service is like for the people who live there. The visit lasted for three and a half hours, and before we visited we looked at all of the information that we had about the home. This included the previous key inspection report, and any reports of any events that had happened in the home. During the visit we looked at things like care plans, and other general record keeping processes. We spoke to people who live at the home to find out what it was like to live there, and we spoke to staff about how they make sure peoples needs and wishes are met. Service users we spoke with told us that staff supported them well and understood their needs very well. Service users told us that they knew who they should speak to if they were unhappy, concerned or wished to make a complaint. They also said that they were confident that staff would listen to their concerns and act upon them accordingly. Records showed that people were supported to access all of the health care services that they required to help them to staff well, such as GPs, community nurses, opticians and dentists. Service users told us that staff understood their health care needs well, and were always quick to respond if people were unwell. We saw that staff followed policies and procedures when administering medication, and medication records were completed in the right way. Information we have, and records in the home told us that staff had access to a wide range of training in subjects that help them to support people in the right way. We saw that staff had a detailed knowledge of peoples needs and worked hard to maintain a good working relationship with the people who live in the home. We saw that there is an effective quality assurance system in place which includes opportunities for people to be involved in how the home runs. This is done by way of service user meetings with key workers, team meetings and the use of annual surveys which are sent out to service users to ascertain their views. What the care home does well:
