What the care home does well The provider is now very careful to do a thorough assessment of any new person coming to the service so that she can continue to provide appropriate care and so that any new person fits in with the existing group. Residents said they got on well together. The home has new care plans in place and they give a good account of the type of care and services people want and need. We had evidence to show that people get very good health care support and that they are helped with their medicines. One person manages her own medication and everyone now has their medicines in their own locked cabinets in their bedroom. People told us they were happy with the activities and outings offered to them. They said they enjoyed going out individually with the provider. All of the residents liked the homes pets. One person in particular liked spending time with these two dogs. We looked in depth at arrangements for protecting vulnerable people. We had spoken evidence from residents and staff that showed us this was being done correctly. We also knew that the provider is quick to report anything that may cause harm to individuals. Suitable policies and procedures were in place and staff were confident in how they would report anything harmful. On the day of the visit the house was clean, warm and comfortable. There was some external damage from the winter but the provider had plans in place to repair this damage and to make good any internal problems resulting from this. We had evidence to show that staff are recruited properly and that they receive good standards of training and support from the provider and from an external consultant who is employed to help with staff development. We looked at a range of documents that show the provider manages the service correctly with the needs of the people who live in the home at the heart of everything she does. What the care home could do better: There was nothing urgent that we want the provider to do in this service but we want her to tell us when she has had the external storm damage repaired. We also advised her to continue to make all her records as detailed as possible. We recognise that this is a small home and that sometimes information is best transferred verbally but we want her to make sure that all of this information is recorded so that a true record is kept of how things progress in the home. Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 7 What we found: We visited the service on the above date and spent around four hours in the home. We met with all of the people who live in the home and spoke to them individually. We aso met with the provider and the staff on duty. We looked at individual assessments, care plans and daily notes for each person. We also checked on training records and saw staff Criminal Records Bureau checks. We looked at information about Adult Safeguarding. We saw some supervision notes. We found all of these to be in order. The provider also voluntarily showed us the statement of accounts for the home and discussed her plans for maintenance and improvement of the building. We looked at all areas of the home. We saw that each bedroom door now has special closing devices that respond to the sound of the fire alarm and we noted that the home now has an up to date radio controlled call bell system. All areas of the home were checked for cleanliness and infection control measures were in place. We also saw the preparation of lunch and we sat with residents when they started the meal. We found that the home continues to operate to the Nationa Minimum Standards and that in some areas they exceed these.
