What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, that was completed on the 26 November 2008. This included; The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that is completed by the service and focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service, this was well completed and was provided when requested. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations including Social Services and visiting health care professionals. Social care professionals who have regular contact with the home were spoken to for direct feedback on the home. The registered manager was also contacted by telephone on the day of the Annual Service Review for up to date information on the service. Four service users surveys were returned to the Care Quality Commission before this date, and used to inform this review. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. This provided information on the service that included numerical information that was requested. The AQAA was well completed by the registered manager, and identified areas that have improved in the last year and others where further developments are either planned, or would benefit residents. The last key inspection was completed in November 2008 and was positive with regard to resident care, with all outcome areas being judged as good, apart from those related to the homes environment. No requirements or recommendations were made following this inspection, although it was noted that some environmental improvements were needed. The home now has access to a maintenance person who responds to any repairs required in the home. In addition the manager confirmed that the sitting room, and conservatory were redecorated in December 2009, and that all the required safety and maintenance checks are completed. The AQAA confirmed a commitment to ongoing redecoration and refurbishment, and that the residents are involved in this process whenever possible. The contents of the AQAA recorded that the home has the required policies and procedures, and that these are regularly updated. The AQAA also recorded that one complaint had been received by the home since the last key inspection. Discussion with the manager clarified that this complaint resulted from a disagreement between two residents, with one resident dominating another. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 This concern was alerted to all appropriate authorities, including social services as a safeguarding matter, and was resolved with a resident being moved to another home. The home worked jointly with social services and demonstrated a positive and proactive approach to safeguarding matters. The manager advised that one of the homes main strengths, is the close staff team, who work hard to make the care home a real home for the residents, that includes meaningful links with the community. The AQAA documented the homes positives, including a person centred approach to care, with communication between staff and residents being productive, ensuring residents are involved in any decision making. It confirmed the home has a core number of long serving staff members providing a strong asset in the care delivery, and stability of the home. Along with strong links and relationships with local services in and out of the home, enabling easy access to information and support should they need it. The AQAA stated that the documentation in the home has been improved along with security measures, that has included a new second front door. Staff training is also kept up-to-date, and supervisions for staff continues to be run on schedule. The information provided by the home confirmed our judgment that the home continues to provide a good service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no change to the inspection schedule and the Care Quality Commission will do a key inspection by 26 November 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service, or the safety of the people using the service.
