Chester Court is a purpose built care home on one of the main roads in the town of Bedlington. It is situated within easy access of local amenities and services. It is of brick build and apex tiled roof construction of a modern and up to date design. It has an open aspect to the front utilising large windows and glass doors to offer light and air to the building. The home is designed in a cluster of bedrooms and lounge areas.82009 The car parking is to the side and front of the building and landscaped gardens are provided to the front. There is level access to the building and to all areas of the home with the use of the two lifts. Some of the bedrooms have their own door from their rooms directly into the garden area. A Statement of Purpose and service user guide are available for prospective residents and their relatives to give them information about services provided by the home and relevant charges.

What the care home does well Care plans contain good information about peoples` needs and how these are met. Records are reviewed regularly and updated as necessary. There was evidence of a good standard of recording in records seen. Staff were well informed about peoples` needs and demonstrated this during the inspection. Plans are regularly updated and assessment tools are used to identify changes. Risk assessments are in place to try to minimise risks to individuals. There was a relaxed atmosphere in the home and residents appeared well cared for and happy. People said that they receive good care and support. People have a choice of food and the menus show a varied diet is provided. The provision of special diets and other food related issues are well recorded within individual plans. The food was well cooked and presented during the inspection. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints and safeguarding. Staff have received safeguarding training. This protects people living in the home. People living in a home that is well furnished and decorated. It is clean and odour free. This means that people live in a comfortable well maintained environment that suits their needs. Staffing is adequate to meet the needs of the people living in the home. There is a committed and settled staff team who provide good support to the people living at Chester Court. Staff receive good training opportunities to ensure that they have the skills to meet peoples` needs. Good recruitment practices protect people living in the home. There are good management systems for assessing the quality of of the service that take account of the views of the people using the service. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: This random inspection was carried out on 17 June 2010 and reviewed the action taken to meet the requirement and recommendations made at the last key inspection. There was good evidence that appropriate action had been taken to address the requirement and each of the recommendations. Each person has an individual plan that provides good information about their needs and how these are met by staff. Plans are updated regularly on a monthly basis and more frequently if peoples needs change. Assessment tools are well used to ensure that changes are identified and this information is incorporated into the persons plan. Systems are in place to show that individual records are regularly audited by the manager to ensure that they reflect peoples needs and demonstrate a good standard of recording. Evidence was in place to show that peoples emotional needs are identified. Individual risk assessments are in place that identify risks and how these are minimised for each individual. People said that they receive very good care and staff meet their individual needs. Two relatives were very positive about the quality of the service, the good communication from staff and the improvement in their mothers quality of life since she moved to Chester Court. Staff were respectful towards people living in the home during the inspection and it was evident that they knew peoples needs and were meeting them effectively. There was a relaxed atmosphere. There was evidence from records and from talking to relatives that there are good communication systems in place. The menus provide evidence of a varied diet and people said that they enjoyed the food. They said they get a good choice and are able to request something different if they do not like the food on the menu. There was evidence in individual records of monitoring of food intake and of special diets being provided. Records show that peoples weight is monitored and action taken to address any concerns as necessary. Good systems are in place for dealing with and recording complaints. No complaints have been made since the last inspection. Staff have received appropriate safeguarding training and can describe the appropriate action to be taken in the event of an allegation being made. People living in the home and relatives said that they felt able to talk to the manager or her staff if they had any concerns and were satisfied their concerns would be taken seriously. The home is very comfortably furnished and was clean and odour free during the inspection. One recommendation made at the last inspection had been fully addressed by both the lounge and bedroom being decorated. The gardens are very attractive and provide good seating areas and a pleasant place to spend time. Bedrooms are personalised and reflect peoples interests and taste. Good infection control procedures are in place. The rota showed that adequate staffing levels were available to meet the needs of the people currently living in the home. The manager reported that there is a settled staff Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 team who are experienced and good numbers of care staff have completed national qualifications in care. Staff records showed that good recruitment procedures are followed to safeguard people living in the home. A staff training plan is in place and training in safe working practices training is provided at appropriate intervals. Staff said that they get plenty of training opportunities. Good quality assurance systems are in place and people are consulted about their views on the service. There are surveys for people using the service and regular meetings so that they can put forward their views. Health and safety systems are in place and records are well kept to demonstrate this.
