What did we do for this annual service review? The last key inspection was on 9th October 2007 and last the Annual Service Review was on 12th December 2008. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: * the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service, * surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service, * information we have about how the service has managed any complaints, * what the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement, * the previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months, * relevant information from other organisations, * what other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The Manager returned the Services annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) questionnaire when we requested it. The AQAA was comprehensive and provided us with the information we asked for. We looked at this information and our judgement is that the Service is still providing a good service to people and that they know what further improvements they need to make. From completed surveys we received comments from one relative of a person who lives at the Service and from five staff members. Additionally, we spoke on the telephone to one Social Services Reviewing Officer. Comments from the relative were all positive. In response to the question as to what the Service does well, the relative said, They take care of my (relative) and the (service users) there very well...they do a marvellous job. The Manager told us in the AQAA that the Service had further developed its person centred approach to the people it supports. She said that, person centred care plans and communication charts have enabled staff to interact with and respond to the needs of people we support more effectively. Also, she said, we have involved people more in their person centred review, ensuring its held in the right venue...people choose whether to have music playing or food and use a preferred format of communication...photos and pictures. The Manager referred to, supporting people to make positive links in their local community - making friends. Comments made by staff, in their completed surveys, supported this progress. One said, the people we support have a very person centred life...(the Service) supports people to their needs and plans activities around their choices, likes and dislikes. Another member of staff said the Service was good at, supporting people in the community and to do activities they like and ask for. Staff were also positive about their working environment, saying, Copperbeech is a Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 friendly, homely place to work/live...there is a close and experienced staff team...we have full support from our Manager. Staff did express concerns over staffing levels during the early part of the morning, in particular, when only one staff member was on duty. We asked the Manager about the background to these comments and she said that one person supported by the Service had made particularly good progress in social and personal skills development during the past 12 months. This has led to more demands upon staff. She said that this issue had recently been discussed with staff and the staff rota was being reviewed. The Social Services Reviewing Officer confirmed to us the very positive progress made by this person and put it down to a, consistent approach by staff (who have) responded to a raised awareness of the persons needs. She added that the person, has more confidence from an increased contact with the local community. The Service has received just one complaint within the past 12 months. From a telephone discussion with the Manager we conclude that the matter was handled well and there has been a satisfatory outcome. We have received no notifications from this Service since our last key inspection. The overall evidence indicates that it continues to provide a good standard of care for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 8th October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 5 Reader Information
