Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The good rating was made at the last Key Unannounced Inspection on 24th September 2008. We will do another key unannounced inspection by 23rd September 2010. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: 1. The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. 2. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. 3. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. 4. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. 5.The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. 6. Relevant information from other organisations. 7. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was completed to a good standard and contained all the information we needed to do the annual service review. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing an good service. The home has consistently met the National Minimum Standards. The AQAA indicates that Cosy Lodge continues to provide good outcomes for the service users. The service actively seeks the views of people living in the home and involves them in the day to day running and planning. The AQAA told us that equality and diversity is incorporated into all aspects of the service. Race, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion and beliefs are promoted and incorporated into what they do. This means that people will be treated equally and as individuals. The AQAA said, All members of staff recognise the importance of respecting views, beliefs and opinions of service users and not impose their own beliefs and opinions on others. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 Each person has a key-worker. This makes sure that peoples views and are promoted and incorporated into the daily running of the home. The service provides weekly Talk Times for each service user. This is a one-to-one chat about areas of the house, their lives, activities, relationships, their wishes and aspirations. This is an opportunity for service users to make all their wishes and aspirations known. There are also weekly service users meetings, when all service users sit down with the staff team to discuss any views, opinions or issues as a group. These are all recorded with action points minuted and timescales attached for each area to be completed. The AQAA gave examples of how the home respond to peoples wishes. For example All the service users enjoy looking at and having photos around the home and mentioned how they would like more pictures; so we invested in a digital photo frame for the lounge that shows them all participating in activities in and out of the home. This can be regularly updated with new pictures. It was discussed and requested from the service users that they would like garden games and a new football goal. These were bought in local shops and we now have games such as a badminton/tennis net, basketball hoop, soft darts to throw, new footballs and a new football goal in the garden which gets used almost daily. One person told us in a survey I have a really good garden there are lots of things to do. Another said I am helped to do what I want. The AQAA said, Everyone likes eggs so we are currently discussing with everybody if they would like to set up a chicken coup at the end of the rear garden to look after them and obtain fresh eggs. Cosy Lodge are in the process of developing My Plans with each person with input and help from friends and families. Each service user has a comprehensive support plan which is developed with each service user and covers all aspects of personal & social support, which also includes their health care needs. It includes a breakdown of their personal likes, dislikes and wishes on how they would like to be supported and treated. At last inspection report recommended that the care plans to be kept up to date and all parts need to be individualised. The AQAA told us that this has now been done. This means the people will receive all the support and care that they need in a way that suits them best. The staff receive the training they need to do their jobs effectively and safely and in the best interests of the people who live at the home. In the surveys staff told us I feel the home is relaxed and happy. The people we support receive a good level of care. We encourage independence. There is a settled staff group. The home is always trying to improve. The snoozelam room could be improved and put to better use. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 The AQAA said that Cosy Lodge maintains an excellent relationships with families of all service users and promote regular phone contact, and facilitate regular home visits including regular overnight stays for the majority of service users. The service told us that they have received no complaints about the service they offer in the last 12 months and they also said they have not had to notify us of any incidences affecting the people who live in the home or the service. We have been informed that the registered manager of the service has been seconded for a 3 month period to one of the companys other homes. The day-to day management of the home is now being undertaken by the deputy manager. We contacted the home and we were told that the registered manager does do some shifts at Cosy Lodge to make sure he is up to date on what is happening there and he also has regular contact with the deputy manager. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection. At the last inspection it was stated that the home provides good outcomes for the people who live there. This review has told us that Cosy Lodge continues to improve and develop its standards and indicates that the home is performing as well it was at the last key inspection. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 23rd September 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
