Croft House Care home provides personal care only for up to 22 older people. It is situated in the village of Freckleton, which is close to the city of Preston. Leisure amenities are close by as well as local shops, pub and a public transport system. The home is located on two floors and there is a chair lift in place as the home does not have an internal shaft lift. The building is suitably adapted for the age range and needs of the people living there. What the care home does well The owner has been proactive in addressing the requirements and recommendations that were issued at the last key inspection carried out by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI). There was a list of activities and forthcoming events advertised on the homes notice board and it was apparent that an increase in the provision of meaningful and appropriate activities is being provided. This helps to show that the provider is committed to providing stimulating and motivational leisure pursuits for people using the service. The staff members on duty expressed their pleasure that improvements within the home continue to be made. During the visit decorators were observed painting the outside fencing, making the home and grounds look much more attractive. What the care home could do better: Certain information was not available during the visit, therefore it is advised that if the registered manager is not going to be present during normal working hours. It would be beneficial to ensure that the senior staff on duty have access to necessary information that is required for inspection purposes. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 11 What we found: A Random Inspection was carried out on the 7th of May 2009, following some concerns that had been raised regarding staff recruitment, staff rotas and service users wellbeing. The present staffing levels and rotas were examined and they were found to be satisfactory, with sufficient numbers of staff being on duty. The inspection was also undertaken to determine if the previous requirements issued by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) had been appropriately addressed. This included the provision of radiator covers, window restrictors on the upper floors and some redecorating of various areas throughout the home. It was evident that many of the issues previously identified had been addressed. These improvements demonstrate that the comfort and health and safety of people living at Croft House is positively being considered. The registered manager was not available during the inspection visit, due to her being on leave and one of the senior carers was the responsible person on duty throughout the visit, however there was the opportunity to have a telephone conversation with the manager and a telephone conversation the following day with the owner to discuss the staffing concerns that had been raised. There was the opportunity to have discussions with the senior carer and with other members of staff. All of the discussions were open and honest, with staff confirming that they do not work excessive hours and they receive their salary on time. There was also the opportunity to have brief conversations with some of the service users and to observe the support and care that was being delivered and it was apparent that people were being treated with dignity and respect. Peoples care plans now contain more detailed, appropriate and relevant information, helping to give the assurance that people using the service will receive their assessed needs. There was a good atmosphere in the home and it was apparent that a number of improvements have been carried out. Unfortunately the filing cabinets that contained all of the recruitment documentation and staff rotas were locked, with the registered manager having the keys.
