What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: - The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. - Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. - Relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home asked for an extension to the time period to complete the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) due to the death of the Responsible Individual who was a Director of the Company. The AQAA was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and discussed with the Registered Manager the effects to the Company of the death of the Director, and, currently, our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service to the people who live there. In the AQAA the Registered Manager identified a number of improvements to the service including improving the attractiveness of the garden with more flowering plants, better seating and bird tables placed outside peoples bedroom windows as well as ongoing staff training to ensure staff have the skills and knowledge to care for people with complex needs. Future improvements include providing transport for trips out of the home, recruiting more nurses and replacing the fire protection system. The Registered Manager explained that these improvements had been delayed due to the death of the Director. People living in the home always tell us that they are happy there: we received six surveys from people living in the home. One person said, Fore Dore has given me a home. They have nice carers and extremely nice nurses and another said, staff are all kind and helpful. People said there were always or usually staff to assist them when they needed and that staff listened to them. There were mixed results about the quality of the food, with three people saying they always enjoyed the food, one person said usually, one person said sometimes and one person said never. Four people returning the survey said the home always provided activities for them to take part in and two people said sometimes. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 inspection and has shown that they have managed issues well. The home works well with us and has shown us that at present their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. The Commission has written to the Company to seek clarification upon the future management of the Company and will keep the home under review. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 7th October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the management and quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
