What the care home does well George Hythe House has identified areas for improvement which they are working towards. The Registered Person for the home is keeping the Care Quality Commission up to date with important issues, which are bringing about change and improvements to the service. What the care home could do better: Care plans and supporting documentation need to be regularly reviewed, dated and signed, and where practicable include the comments and the signature of the persons whose care plan it is. The quality of care that people receive could be enhanced by care plans containing greater detail with regards to individuals preferred daily routines, and information as to their preferences and choices, including activities. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: The reasons for this Random Inspection was to follow up on requirements made at the previous Key Inspection which took place on the 2nd September 2009 and the outcome is as follows. We looked at the care plans, risk assessments and daily records of four people. We found that care plans and risk assessments had not been reviewed, in some instances for periods in excess of six months. We did find that monthly reviews are carried out whereby any issues affecting the individual within this period are recorded. Whilst this is good practice, we found no direct link to changes in care plans or the updating or reviewing of risk assessments. Care plans and other supporting documentation including risk assessments need to be regularly reviewed, signed and dated. Where practicable the views of the individual should also be included within the care plan. We spoke with care staff and asked them about the care and support required of those individuals whose records we had viewed. All care staff had a good understanding of their needs, and confirmed information contained within care plans. Staffing levels within the home have been reviewed since we last visited on the 2nd September 2009, staff we spoke with told us that this has meant that staff now have more time to spend with people living at the home, which includes spending time talking with them. We were told that night staffing levels had also been reviewed, and that the number of staff on duty during the night will increase in the near future, once those appointed commence work. Training for staff has taken place in some topics which we had identified at the previous Key Inspection, which have included the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. The Team Leader advised that all staff have received updated training in moving and handling people safely, and some staff have received training in the administration of Insulin. We noticed that staff along with the Activities Organiser supported people to visit the day care centre, which is located next door to the home. Music was playing in communal areas of the home, and was reflective of music enjoyed by those living at the home. We observed staff interacting with people living at the home, and noticed that staff were polite and courteous and participated in conversation, which those living at the home enjoyed.
