Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. What other people have told us about the service. We also sent out a small number of surveys to people to comment on the service. Some of the comments we received appear in the body of the report. This was an unannounced visit by one inspector on 19th April 2010. During the visit we talked with people living in the home and their relatives as well as the staff and the registered manager. The last visit to this home was made on 5th June 2007. The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. These are some of the things we saw on our visit: We arrived at the home late morning and spent time at the home over the lunchtime period. People were given a choice of meal. People told us that they enjoyed their food and it looked and smelt appetising. Some people are supported at mealtimes by their relatives. Others were given support by staff in a relaxed and unhurried way. One relative felt that the continuity of staff was a strength of the home and that the stability of the workforce had a positive effect on communications and that people really got to know the staff. We spoke with another person who had raised concerns on several occasions with staff. They had always felt able to raise concerns and felt that action was taken. We saw that staff were transporting people in wheelchairs that were not fitted with footplates. We brought this to the attention of the nurse in charge of the unit. Wheelchairs should always be fully assembled for use with footplates in place for the safe transportation of people. These are some of the comments people made in our surveys: There is a very friendly and positive atmosphere which permeates throughout the home. Always on the ball with any special needs, always very clean with well trained and knowledgeable staff, cannot fault in any way.
