We visited the home on the 18th March to carry out a random inspection. The purpose of the visit was to ensure the standard of care is good and concerns relating to the kitchen, following an investigation from the environmental department and subsequent conviction due to breach of regulations, have been looked at by the manager and standards have improved. We looked at the quality of care in some areas; Health and Personal Care, Daily Life and Social Activities, Environment and Staffing. Two residents care plans examined had a plan of care setting out the action required by staff to ensure all health and social care needs are met. Plans of care are being regularly reviewed with involvement of families where possible. One staff member spoken to about care planning said, They are easy to follow. A resident spoken to said, The girls know what my needs are. One care plan we looked at informed us of the changing needs of one individual and clearly identified what support was required, the need for regular visits of a district nurse to provide treatment and how staff could monitor the situation to ensure the resident receives the best care and attention. Risk assessments are in place and reviewed regularly, they are updated when necessary reflecting any changes that may have occurred individually and in the environment to ensure residents and staff are safe and protected. The manager has developed a system of recording each residents participation in social activities or there hobbies to ensure residents are continually stimulated and any problems can be identified. At the time of the visit the hairdresser was attending to residents in the salon. One resident spoken to said, I enjoy having my hair done. At the time of the visit we watched staff talking to residents and joining in with reading and games, routines are relaxed for the benefit of the people who live at Glen Marie. They have access to a Mini- bus for day trips, when asked about outings one resident said, Oh yes we go out for trips when the weather gets better. We had a look around the kitchen area and found the cook using fresh fruit and vegetables, ensuring residents receive a wholesome nutritious diet. The chef was on a days leave but the senior carer was cooking and we spoke to her and she said, I do the cooking when chef is off. There was written evidence seen of all staff who have completed Food and Hygiene Training. One staff member said, We all now have completed the course. Since the concerns about the kitchen, the manager has put in place new cleaning schedules and undertakes a weekly audit to ensure the kitchen is kept clean and hygienic. Staff members said, It has been a wake up call, And, We all have tasks to complete now in the kitchen. Records were seen of cleaning schedules signed off by the manager. The kitchen area was clean and had recently been redecorated and a new sink fitted on the advice of a company brought in to train the staff in all areas of health, safety and cleanliness in the kitchen. We spoke to residents about the quality of food and they were all positive and included, The food is very good Also, I come and stay here because the meals are top quality. We had a walk around the building and it was clean and tidy with some redecoration completed to the hallways and communal areas on the ground floor. Some bedrooms Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 should be refurbished and decorated to ensure residents live in pleasant surroundings. One staff member spoken to said,We are completing the redecoration programme to most of the bedrooms. We looked at staff rotas and spoke to residents and staff about the numbers of staff on duty. We found there is a sufficient mix of staff to provide the care and support required and some comments included, There is always someone to help if I needed something, And one member of staff spoken to said, We have a good staff team and work well together.
