What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received about Glendale since the last key inspection on 21/11/09 and the last Annual Service Review on 2/3/09. We also looked at the homes latest Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This is a self-assessment document that the manager has completed to tell us how well outcomes are being met for the people who live here. We looked at any events or changes that the home has told us about. These are called notifications and it is important that the home keeps us up-to-date about anything that affect the well-being of people who use this service. We spoke with the manager about any changes and improvements to the service over the past year. What has this told us about the service? The manager sent us the homes Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It gave us some information to show areas where the home has improved since the last key inspection. We also telephoned the manager to find out about other changes and improvements. This home has been open about nine years and the four people have lived here since it first opened. There have been some recent changes to meet the ageing needs of the people who live here. For example the home has arranged new leisure activities for people such as swimming. The manager said there are much better social networking opportunities for people as the home has started a regular social event called the Breakaway Club where people can meet up with friends. People now use a local social club for this where they can enjoy a disco, darts and pool. The people who live here have annual health checks and the home makes sure that staff have training in any identified health needs. As people are becoming older, staff are having more training in dementia and stoke care to support the changing needs of the people who live here. One person has been very poorly and has just moved to a nursing home. The home has worked well with other agencies to re-assess that person and to make sure that their needs could be met at another service. Over the past year the home has had a new washing machine, new dishwasher and the kitchen has been repainted. There are plans to provide new flooring in the hallway. At this time there is one bathroom and a separate shower room, but the manager said that the shower room is not really suitable for the needs of the people who live here. It would be better if the shower room was made into a walk-in shower room. The manager said that the home benefits from a very stable staff group, and that many staff have worked here for some years. This is good as it means staff can see any change in needs of the people who live here. It is also very good that nine out of ten staff have a national training qualification in care (called NVQ 2). Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 The people who live here find it very difficult to communicate, so the home continues to put information in pictures to support their communication needs. The home has a letting us know what you think form for people and their relatives to comment on the service. The provider is also planning to have a national forum for representatives of people who use the Milbury Care services so that they can share their views with senior managers of the organisation. There have been no complaints received by the home or by CQC. This review has shown us that the home continues to provide good outcomes for the people who live here, with some planned improvements for the future. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We may do a key inspection before 20/11/10. However we can inspect the home at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people who live here. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 5 Reader Information
