It was built in 1887 and was once the Vicarage for St Andrews Church. It has been extended and is now a Annual Service Review Page 2 of 5 residential care home, which provides services for up to thirty-four older people, some of whom may have dementia or mental health needs. The Registered Provider also operates a day centre for older people on the same site but managed separately from the home. The property is close to Roker Park in a mainly residential street close to the sea front. Sunderland city centre is a short distance away and can be reached by public transport, which passes frequently. Local facilities include a church and a small selection of shops. The accommodation is laid out over three floors, with additional mezzanine levels and there are thirty-four single bedrooms, some with en-suite facilities. The first and second floors are accessible by passenger lift, however the mezzanine levels can only be reached by stairs, therefore, is only suitable for mobile residents. There are also three communal lounge areas and two dining areas. External features include a large and secluded walled garden, which are well kept and equipped with outdoor furniture, sunshades and barbecue facilities. The current scale of charges is between 455.00 to 465.00 per week. For this annual service review, we looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection on 29 October 2007. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the Manager of the home contained good information. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using this service. Information we have about how the home has managed any complaints or safeguarding adults referrals. What the residents told us in the residents questionnaires that were received. What the staff told us in the staff questionnaires that were received. What the home has told us about things that have happened there. These are called notifications, and are a legal requirement. What has this told us about the service? The Manager of the home sent us an annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. The AQAA was received in time for this annual service review to take place. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment, based on the information given, is that the home continues to provide good service. The Manager knows what further improvements they need to make, and she has identified these in the AQAA. These include: Encouraging more staff to undertake NVQ training. Arrange for staff to receive end of life care training for the care staff. The home is to institute small group meetings to make sure the the residents are able to express their views more. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The details in the AQAA, residents comments and staff comments tell us that the home continues to provide a good service that is managed by a competent manager and a dedicated team of staff. All health and safety issues are regularly reviewed, including training in this respect.
