What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included the annual quality assurance assessment, AQAA, that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us the completed AQAA on time and it gave us the information we asked for. Surveys were received from 8 staff, 9 residents and 3 health care professionals. Some of the residents were given help from relatives to complete the form. Residents said that they received enough information about the home prior to moving in and that this helped them decide if it was the right place for them. Surveys also confirm that each person received a contract or terms and conditions for their stay at the home. Residents say that the receive the care and support they need and that they get medical care when needed. A resident commented, I think the care that is provided is a very high standard. A healthcare professional said, Gorselands treats everyone as an individual and helps each resident to maintain as much independence as possible with support in the things each person is unable to manage. This is reviewed regularly. Another professional said, As a nursing home it provides excellent care to their patients. A third professional said, Gorselands listen to their patients needs and the day to day care is excellent. All staff are trained regularly. One person said that he/she would like access to a bath or shower at least weekly. One survey made criticisms about the care provided saying that it is variable, that communication with family members could be improved, and, that suggestions regarding care are not followed. The AQAA states that the home has an activities organiser and that there is an activities programme, which includes reflexology and trips out by mini bus. Residents confirm that there are activities that they can take part in. A staff member commented that there is a choice of activities and that residents have the option not to join if they Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 dont want to. A health care professional states that the home supports people to lead the life they choose and that residents privacy and dignity are promoted. One person commented that the provision of activities in the afternoons and for those who are less able to get about could be improved. Another suggestion made is that craft activities could be provided. Another person suggested the provision of Sky TV and Sky Sports channels. The home has 2 pet dogs and is a member of the Cinnamon Trust which promotes the therapeutic benefits of pets for those in residential care. The AQAA states that residents religious needs are catered for and that staff have training in equality and diversity. Residents say that they like the meals at the home, that there is a good choice and that drinks are always provided. Staff also commented that there is a good choice of food for the residents. Residents say that they know who to speak to if they are not happy and that they are aware of the complaints procedure. A residents relative contacted the Commission with a complaint, which was referred to social services for investigation under the safeguarding of vulnerable adults procedures. Staff are said to be available to residents when they need them and staff confirm that there are enough staff to meet residents needs. There is an induction programme for newly appointed staff, which staff say prepares them for the job. There is a staff training programme and more than half of the care staff have National Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3 in care. Staff report that the training they receive is relevant to their work and gives them enough knowledge about health care and meeting residents needs. Staff also confirmed that they receive support from their manager, which includes regular meetings to discuss their work. A health care professional commented, Staff at Gorselands all seem to work to the best of their ability and to work as a team. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 19/10/2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
