0Greenacres is a care home which provides personal care to persons over the age of 65 years. It is situated at the top of a hill within the small town of Caistor. Local facilities include shops, library, church, chapel and public houses. The registered owner/manager provides transport at no extra charge for residents wishing to access these facilities. The home stands in its own gardens, with parking available at the front of the building. Communal and bedroom (eight single and one double) accommodation is provided on the ground floor. There is a separate lounge, large reception area and dining room. Greenacres is a family run business. What the care home does well People are cared for in a clean and comfortable environment and the home is decorated to a reasonable standard. All people spoken with made positive comments about the care they received and the positive relationship they felt they had with staff. Observations made during this visit was that enough staff are on duty to support people who required help and that staff were mindfully of residents dignity and privacy. A resident commented that `if I have to be in a place like this, I couldn`t be in a better one`. The provider, manager and staff work well as a team and there is a very stable staff group, enabling good knowledge of the needs of people. People are encouraged to make choices about their daily lifestyles and individual likes and dislikes are catered for. Surveys returned to us were very positive and comments included praise for the staff at this home. The manager told us that care plans are in the process of being updated and will be personalised to reflect peoples needs. The provider said that he is looking to employ a activities organiser so as to ensure that people are offered a variety of stimulating activities. What the care home could do better: There was no evidence of non-compliance on the day of our visit. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This was an unannounced visit which formed a random inspection visit. It lasted approximately three hours and we took into account previous information held by us including the previous inspection report, the service history and records of any incidents that we had been notified of since the last inspection. During this visit we talked to people to obtain their views about whether they felt their needs were being met and about their quality of life. We also spoke to two staff to learn their views about how they felt their training and development needs were being met. We also spoke with the manager to learn of any changes which have taken place and if there were any risks to the people living in the home. Before this inspection visit we received 4surveys from the people living in the home and 5 from staff to learn of their views. We also received surveys from a visiting health care worker which was also positive. Comments from the people were all positive and included, the staff are good, theres always staff around to help me. Another resident stated that my family visit and have all commented on how welcoming the staff are who offer them tea. Surveys showed that 2 people felt that there are usually activities in the home and 2 felt that there were always activities in the home. All surveys showed us that they all liked the meals at the home. One resident commented that, the food is very good, excellent food and we get a choice. All residents surveys received confirmed that they know how to make a complaint and that they know who to speak to if they are unhappy. Comments made to the inspector were, I feel safe here, the staff are kind, thoughtful and are sensitive to my needs. Comments from the relatives and friends surveys show that. my mother is well looked after she likes the staff, she says that they are very caring. This is the next best thing to home. Other surveys told us that, They keep the residents well fed and warm and clean and do their best to attend to all their needs. A visiting health care workers survey tells us that the homes assessments and arrangements usually ensures that the right service is planned for people. The survey also told us that peoples health care needs are usually monitored and reviewed and that peoples privacy and dignity is respected by care staff. Four residents surveys confirmed that they always received the medication and health care support that they need. Surveys also showed us that these residents felt that staff are available when they need them. Two members of staff confirmed that they had undertaken training including; fire training, first aid, moving and handling, infection control, medication training and adult protection training. Training is undertaken to ensure that staff can meet peoples needs. They told us that there is an ongoing training programme, which they are all expected to attend. The two carers confirmed that they have undertaken NVQ, National Vocational Qualifications in caring for the elderly level 2 or level 3. The carers confirmed that they have undertaken employment checks carried out by the provider. This included obtaining two references, a criminal record bureau check (CRB), protection of vulnerable adults check (POVA) and a formal interview. Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 A community nurses survey tells us that the staff always have the right skills and experience to support peoples social and health care needs. She also commented that the home provides a homely, caring, friendly environment. Staff are friendly and helpful. Residents are always clean and well fed, fresh food is cooked on the premises. The provider puts on varied entertainment for the residents, which friends and family are welcome to participate in. The registered manager was present at the time of this visit. Feedback was given about the good outcomes at the end of the visit. The quality rating for this service is two star. This means the people who use this service experience good quality outcomes.
