Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? To complete the annual service review for Grisedale Croft we, The Care Quality Commission (CQC), gathered information in a variety of ways. An Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was sent to the home to be completed by the registered manager. The AQAA is a self assessment and dataset that must be completed annually by every registered service. It is one of the main ways we gather information about the provision of care and the ways in which providers believe they are meeting the assessed needs of those people using the service. The manager gave details of what the home has achieved since the last inspection and what she hopes to put in place over the next 12 months. We sent questionnaires to residents, family members, health care professionals and staff, to ask their opinions about the service provided. We looked at information about how the manager dealt with any issues or complaints and checked the last key inspection report. We also looked at any notifications about events at the home sent to CQC since the last inspection and at information that may have been received from other external agencies. What has this told us about the service? From the details outlined in the AQAA and information received from other sources we judge that this home continues to meet the National Minimum Standards (NMS) of the Care Standards Act. We had a reasonable response to the survey forms most of which contained positive comments about the care and support provided by Grisedale Croft. Comments from those living in the home included, The home is clean and we get nice food, There is not much that could be better. Comments from family members include, My mother is happy at Grisedale Croft and she left her home of 60 years. The staff made her feel very comfortable. They respect her individuality and privacy whilst encouraging her to socialise when appropriate, I feel the home makes the best of what is, given the funds available and the service seems satisfactory. One family member did however express the wish that the home would buy nice bread. We received positive comments from the district nursing service which included, The home offers very high levels of care and commitment to the people living there, We have a close working relationship with the carers and pharmacy providing the medicines and every care is taken with the medication records. Many of the care staff have worked at the home for a number of years and all commented that the staff team, Gives care and consideration to residents involvement in the local community wherever possible. Another survey said that The residents welfare is paramount and we try to give the best care and support to the residents. All the staff that completed surveys agreed that the residents are well cared for and that the standard of care is very high. Although, on the whole the staff comments were favourable there was a general feeling that the residents would benefit greatly from a larger staff team that would allow more individual time to spend with the residents, provide more activities and maybe take them out more. It was also generally felt that the home would benefit from some upgrading and the purchase of new furnishings. Over the past year the manager has accessed new manual handling equipment as Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 early as possible to ensure the assessed needs are met quickly. All health care changes are discussed with family members sooner rather than later. Activities have improved with more outings arranged and regular entertainment provided. Training in Protection of Vulnerable Adults has been completed and NVQ training is now being undertaken through a new provider, which has been of benefit to the staff. There are now 2 moving and handling key workers in place and the manager is working towards a qualification in computer studies. Domestic staff now cover 7 days a week, some redecoration has been completed and some new carpeting laid. The manager did confirm that the main barriers to improvement were lack of funding and the length of time taken to complete the recruitment process for new staff. Over the next 12 months there are hopes that the refurbishing of the building will continue providing funding is available. The manager is hoping to to improve the amount of information available regarding end of life wishes and care. It is hoped to introduce more flexibility into the daily routines and look at more activities for residents with reduced mobility. Plans are in hand to assist the staff to complete all sections of their personal development files through staff supervision. All administrative procedures will be brought up to date and it is hoped to update the computer skills of the senior staff. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The Care Quality Commission will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required.
